Composition Of Shaltoux Rapid Cough Expectorant
Each 5ml contains:
Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride BP 14mg, Ammonium Chloride BP 135mg, Sodium Citrate BP 57mg, Menthol BP 1.1mg, Syrupy Base.
Color - Caramel
Flavor - Coolmint S and Mix Fruit.
Excipients-Methyl Paraben BP, Propyl Paraben BP, Sugar, Sorbitol 70% Non-crystallising BP, Propylene Glycol BP, Glycerin BP, Citric Acid Monohydrate BP.

Pharmacological Category
Cough expectorant used to treat wet or productive cough.
Pharmacological Action
- Diphenhydramine blocks the effects of the naturally occurring chemical histamine in the body and thus reduces mucosal irritation and mucus secretion.
- Ammonium Chloride and Sodium Citrate are saline expectorants and their expectorant action is caused by irritation of the bronchial mucosa.
- Menthol is a powerful expectorant and demulcent.

Therapeutic Indications Of Shaltoux Rapid Cough Expectorant
Relieves cough, sneezing, nasal congestion due to throat and bronchial irritation as may occur with common cold, allergy and bronchitis or inhaled irritants.

Contraindications
Closed angle glaucoma and urinary retention is aggravated. Concomitant consumption of alcohol, CNS depressants, barbiturates and tranquilizers.
Dosage Of Shaltoux Rapid Cough Expectorant
- Adult: 1-2 teaspoonsful.
- Children >2yr: ½-1 teaspoonful.
To be taken every 4-6 hours, or as directed by the physician.

Warnings And Precautions For Use In Special Populations
- Children-Contraindicated in children less than 2 years.
- Pregnancy-Shaltoux Rapid should be used only if clearly needed.
- Nursing Mothers-Diphenhydramine is excreted in breast milk but this has not been quantified.

Effects On Ability To Drive And Operate Machinery
Tasks requiring mental alertness may be impaired and patients whose work or occupation involves driving vehicles or handling machinery should be cautioned.

Phenothiazine derivatives, benzodiazepines, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants.
Symptoms Of Over Dosage And Its Treatment
Symptoms of overdose include dry mouth, headache, nausea, tachycardia and urinary retention. Best treated with gastric lavage and supportive measures.
