All About Pharmaceutical Technology Programme In Nigeria
Pharmaceutical technology programme |
It is important that secondary school students know about the different sectors related to pharmacy. This will enable them to make an informed decision on what they want to study and where to do it. That is why I step out to clarify who a pharmaceutical technologist is to Nigerians.

Academic requirements For OND Programme
Just as was stated earlier, some polytechnics run this course under Ordinary National Diploma (O.N.D) and Higher National Diploma (H.N.D). The admission requirements for the different schools offering it seems to be very similar. It requires an O’ level result comprising of four or five credit passes in English language, Mathematics, Physics, chemistry, biology/agricultural science in not more than one or two sitting. Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination (J.A.M.B) subjects include the Use of English, Mathematics, Physics, and Biology.Successful candidates will start from OND, which last for a period of two years, after which they are awarded a D. Pharm. The programme last for four academic semesters of classrooms, laboratory experiments and workshop activities. Another semester is devoted for Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (S.I.W.E.S) in an industry. The industry can be a pharmaceutical or other industry where their services are needed such as chemical industry, etc.
Academic Requirements For HND Programme
Pharmaceutical Technology HND programme can be continued from Pharmaceutical Technology OND programme within that school or from another school. This is because some of the schools with the OND programme do not have the HND of it. The requirements to continue pharmaceutical technology in HND after completing the OND programme is similar to the requirements of those who wants to study the course with an OND degree from another course relating to pharmaceutical technology. The requirement for those with OND related to Pharmacy but not Pharmaceutical Technology such as Pharmacy technician include minimum of lower credit passes in addition to one-year work experience. A credit pass may be accepted on the ground that the applicant has more than two years working experience. The programme of HND is similar to that of the OND. Just that it is a continuation of the lectures from OND. It lasts for a period of two years making it a total of four years course from OND to HND. HND students do not go for SIWES tarining. Graduate do not go for the compulsory internship like the pharmacist or face the newly introduces compulsory internship graduate examination.
After graduation, they move on to National youth service corps programme for a period of one year serving their fatherland.
The Course Outlines
It is related to the pharmacy but the curriculum is more concentrated in an aspect of pharmacy. The main difference is that it concentrates solely on the technology of designing drugs. Simply put, they go deep into pharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy. They learn more on the tools in creating medicines in the manufacture of drugs.A glimpse of some of their course are;
- Health environment
- Chemistry of pharmaceuticals
- Consumer science
These and many more courses in pharmaceutical technology will provide relevant knowledge on pharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy, pharmacology and its technological components. Just like pharmacy spend some time studying some medical courses, they also touch some pharmacy courses such as Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy etc.
Job Description
They can work in various industries from pharmaceuticals to chemical to botanicals. However, in situations whereby they are employed in a pharmaceutical industry, they must work under the supervision of a pharmacist. They carry out laboratory experiments and provide results to the pharmacist. One aspect, which I believe they are very good at, is the aspect of operating machinery such as electronic equipment’s that test samples of chemicals and drugs.Read Also: How To Become A Pharmacy Technician In Nigeria
They give results of experiments, keep records, fill out forms, and keep laboratory equipment clean and in good working conditions. When they work in pharmacy school laboratories such as pharmaceutical microbiology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, and industrial pharmacy, they prepare the laboratory before every practical class and clean up the place after each. Prepare culture of bacteria for testing; make calculations from simple experiments like weight uniformity etc. when they are found in the hospital setting, they can interpret prescriptions and assist in preparing extemporaneous products. However, this hospital jobs may be better handled by the Pharmacy technician.
However, it must be noted that pharmaceutical technology is a postgraduate specialty in universities for pharmacist. The introduction of this programme has led to several call from Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria on the Federal Ministry of Education to scrap the programme citing the statutory powers of PCN to regulate the training of persons who wish to practice pharmacy in Nigeria. This is because the programme is not presently under the powers of PCN and can lead to infiltration of the drug market by those not properly trained in line with set standards..
They are not licenced by PCN and they are not licensed to operate a community pharmacy shop or other functions of a Pharmacist in Nigeria. You can search this blog using the search box for the duties and jobs of a pharmacy.

My don't write what u don't no because it might result to problem to u. For ur information pharmaceutical technologist are professionals in their own will and work under nobody or ur so call Pharmacist...resdy my lip OK.
ReplyDeleteThanks Osekete for dropping by. First I wonder how what I wrote might result to problem for me. This is not the right way to contribute to a topic. As for your query, if you are a regular reader of this blog, you will know that I take my time to research confirming data across many sources. Pharmaceutical technology is a degree under pharmacy at master level. However, the pharmaceutical technology offer by polytechnics is what I wrote about here. To buttress my point, I will provide you with links to post on this topic. There are few countries in the world that offers this course. The most popular is pharmacy technician. The standard in those countries are same and very similar. I wonder how the standard in Nigeria became different. For further reading, consider these

Mr ugbede you have wrote a very nice article and i love the way you simplify which a lame man will understand. But will like to disagree with you on the point that Pharmaceutical Technologist offer Courses like Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Clinical Pharmacology, forensic Biochemistry, General & Hospital Dispensing, Pharmacy Calculation and so on. If you ask me what a pharmacist can do a pharmaceutical technology will do as well. A Rxist Dispense, technologist do as well.A Rxist understood drug-drug interaction a technology understood as well.and the list continue. God bless you and continue the good work
ReplyDeletePlease Mr Ugbede am confused here about these pharmaceutical technology .. please is that course not a good course ..I don't understand
DeleteThanks Olusanya for your candid contribution. I dare not deny that fact. I did not study pharmaceutical technology in polytechnic, hence I cannot say much about the curriculum. I have actually seen the curriculum but do not know the content. There is a fact I know. The course is kind of new worldwide and the course is more technological.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Keep the good work going..

....fenks
Well Igwe, welcome to the discussion. Before I reply you, let me express myself here. i like the part of your contribution I understood. When contributing to topics other than social media, the use of shorthand can be misleading especially to readers who come from other countries.
ReplyDeleteIf I understand your first point clearly, you believe Pharmaceutical Technology is not new? Well, adjectives qualify. It is more like comparing two things relative to another. If I say this blog is beautiful, I am obviously comparing it with another or a bunch of others. Before pharmacy, medicine and surgery, pharmaceutical technology is new in our schools world wide.
For your second opinion, you feels they are same with pharmacists. I did not post this to promote any profession but there is a general battle worldwide to be recognized as pharmacist most especially in Nigeria. I know that the regulatory body met with PCN to come to an agreement when they presented their curriculum to prove it is same with that of Pharmacy schools in Nigeria. There was an attempt to allow them sell certain types of drugs other than POM.
Good luck on their battle.
nice write up but for update pharmaceutical technologist are licensed to practice community service also..
ReplyDeleteThanks Olive. If you mean community pharmacy, this is what I know. I know there was an agreement for pharmaceutical technologist to sell selected POM drugs including all OTC medication in Nigeria. The honest truth is that I currently do not know if the law have been pass. If it is available to you, I would love to see it and update this post to that effect. If the word community service implies services to the people, most health related fields are free to carry on with such activities. Once again thank you

ReplyDeleteGood. But you know according to NBTE program for polytechnics , during national diploma students will go for four months SIWES. And after students completed the national diploma , students will also mandate to go for one year industrial or hospital training depending on the course of study. And many of pharmaceutical technology students must pass through this level before coming back for HND program to complete the program of Five years which they call four years.( ND 2years one year industrial or hospital training and 2years HND 5yrs.)
ReplyDeleteThis is my contribution. Am Abdulrasaq Omitogun.
Correct
DeleteThat's my honourable Head of Class.
Gooday gentleman ,before i sketch further on this ,it's pertinent to letting you know who a pharmaceutical Technologist is .
ReplyDeleteA pharmaceutical technologist is a professional who is well trained in higher institution of leanings to execute the following responsibilities
*interpret a prescription from a prescriber
*counsel patients on how to take their medications
*compound extemporaneous preparation
* research and development
*post marketing surveillance
*drug analysis.
It should however be noted that, these professionals are not to work under the supervision of anyone .
more importantly, this renounced professionals( pharmaceutical technologists) are to be regulated by NAPTTON and not PCN .
That's right Dangote

ReplyDeleteNot sure but guess it is possible. Get in contact with the wchoscof choice for list of accepted degrees and course as each school have different conditions for admission

You don't have the background knowledge required to proceed.
My school don't accept that but can't say about other schools.
There are some things you will find difficult to cope with such as interpretation of prescription

DeletePeople should stop commenting on issues they are not properly grounded on, let me inform the writer of this cock and bull story that pharmaceutical Technology program in Nigeria started at yaba school of pharmaceutical Technology,Lagos in 1978 as a certificate course as introduced by the then pharmacists Board of Nigeria and the school was a under the federal ministry of Health. The writer may wish to know that some other countries run pharmaceutical technology at a degree level. when University of ife noun OAU started pharmacy program , it was at a diploma level at Ife dispensary which later metamorphosed into faculty of pharmacy and they was no internship program for graduates then. There is no difference in training and practice between a pharmaceutical Technologist and a pharmacist except on certificate {B-pharm and HND Pharma}. please Deceiving innocent minds, if you are a pharmacist, practice as such and let the Technologist practice as well. we are in a competitive world.
DeleteThank you for the history lesson. Pharm tech is a degree course in some countries. They are allowed to practice in those countries because they have a clear cut boundary. In Nigeria they want to be pharmacist which is an encroachment into an already established profession. There is no country where pharm tech operate as pharmacist because no government will sit down and and allow two degree run one profession. You cannot see an mbbs in polytechnic challenging that from University. It is never done
DeleteMy dear let me ask you. Do pharm tech graduates not go for youth service after their HND programs in Nigeria? What do u mean clear cut boundary. You will have to stop being economical with the truth okay?
DeleteHello good day, please I have an advance diploma in science laboratory technology and an ND in pharmaceutical technology can I use either of the two in applying for direct entry for Bs.c pharmacy or nursing?
ReplyDeleteI don't think any school accept diploma. You can check with the recent jamb brochure for further details

ReplyDeleteInteresting topic here, unfortunately most opinions here are coming from people without much information on either in Nigeria scheme of service or academic grading. For the avoidance of doubt, let me put some records straight here. [1] Pharmaceutical Technology program started at the defunct federal school of pharmaceutical Technology yaba in 1979 as approved by Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo as Head of State. [2] In civil service grading in Nigeria, Technologists cadre fall within HND Holders, [3] Circular 2 of 1990 clearly spelt out those health cadres that are within the Assistance, Technicians and Technologists carder's which pharmaceutical Technologists is number one[1] on the list. This proves that it is a Recognized cadre in the eyes of our scheme of service for both federal, state ,LGAS , Academia , mission, etc. [4] A graduate of pharmaceutical Technology can work in hospitals, pharmaceutical company, pharmacy shops, research institutes/Laboratories, etc. [5] With OND or HND, one can get a direct entry to read pharmacy in the university, or for PGD / masters in pharmaceutical Technology as well. we should stop this stupid intra professional Wrangling's that only birth hatred and acrimony among different professionals. We should always remember that the history of pharmacy has its roots in dispensing assistants and was trained by missionary doctors then. whether you are a pharmacist ,Technologist or Technician, always ask your self what you have contributed towards alleviating the suffering of mankind. Those who are making millions from the sell of drugs in Nigeria are not even professionals.
ReplyDeleteYour pint are valid. Unfortunately, you did not touch in the fact that most Pharm tech are struggling to override other profession like opening community pharmacy which is against the Nigeria law that states that only Pharmacist trained in a registered school with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) can
DeleteI have read other people's ideas and opinions concerning Pharmaceutical Technology Programme in Nigeria. We thank God, the program have come to stay both in Government and Private Health Institutions in our country.
ReplyDeletePlease, kindly send me the recent/latest copies of the Scheme of Service for Pharmaceutical Technologists in Nigeria.
Forward this to my E-mail address.
Thank you.
I don't have it
DeleteI think no one is restricted to any choice of business venture if he or she knows what to and what not.
DeleteThe most important aspect is to properly register the premise and employ the registered professionals who are capable to do the work.
It is only in Nigeria that all this is happening and the problem we have will be solved if all scientists will come together as one.
Pharmacists, pharmacologists, pharmaceutical technologists, pharmacy technicians and so on.
This attitudes of separation, discrimination superiority is not here in Europe, everyone put their contributions on the table without issues. This is my advice. Yemi
