The tablet and the gel/jelly. The tablet is either oral or vagina insert. The gel/jelly is always vagina inserted.

Can I Use metronidazole Insert During Period

I get this question a lot. The question is not very straightforward. It can happen in two ways.

Your period can start a few days into treatment. In that case, don't stop treatment. Complete the dosage.

For example, you are expected to use it for 6 days. You started today. After two days, your period started. There is no need to stop. Continue insert for the next four days.

The second situation is getting a prescription for metronidazole during your period. The NHS recommends that the treatment should be delayed until after the period ends. But this advice may not be used at all times. The decision depends on the condition you are treating.

If the period just started and the infection is severe, most prescribers will advise you to start immediately. This is especially so if you are a woman that has a long period like for a week.

In a situation where the condition is not severe, you will be advised to wait for your period to end before you begin. In either case, it calls for discretion.

Metronidazole gel will not affect the period in any way. Neither will the drug be affected. The only difference is that period may affect adsorption.

During this period, the metronidazole gel should be applied immediately after a warm bath. This will reduce the amount of blood in the vagina. This will reduce the negative effect of period in the gel.
