Can Ruzu Herbal Bitters Cure Staphylococcus Aureus

Ruzu herbal bitters (RHB) is a poly-herbal preparation that is widely taken in Nigeria. RHB is an aqueous preparation of Curculigo pilosa root (40%), Uvaria chamae stem (30%) and Citrullus colocynthis bark (40%). RHB is claimed for the management/treatment of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, infection and infertility among others including fibroid. Some are using it to abort pregnancy.

There are wide claims in the ability of ruzu bitters for the treatment of infection. Fortunately, a little research has shown that it has antibiotic and antifungal properties. One of the test organisms is Staphylococcus aureus.

Ruzu bitters were able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The area of inhibition was 9±1.0. This is against the ciprofloxacin brand that had 11±1.0. This is a positive result considering the fact that ruzu bitters is a herbal formulation with a high acceptance level and affordable.

Another part of the research shows that it is effective at low therapeutic doses. For example, the minimum inhibitory concentration was 0.625 ml. That is impressive as very few drugs can achieve that.

However, this post is not encouraging the use of ruzu bitters against standard treatment for Staphylococcus aureus. However, it is meant to establish the fact that Ruzu bitters claims on treatment of Staphylococcus aureus may be true after all.
