Post Camp/Rest Leave
After all the stress from orientation camp, CM may want to take a rest. They may want to go home to get this rest. Some also will want to go back home to get their properties. However, NYSC require that CM should finish documentation after getting acceptance letter from their place of primary assignment (PPA) before embarking on any such journey. This process can take anytime between a day to two months or even more.
It is good to get a place to stay and work before doing this. This is because CM need the signature of their PPA head which is not possible without acceptance letter from the place. And besides that, knowing the house to stay for one year will help determine the type of house properties to buy or bring back from home.

For those who redeployed and have been approved, they can visit home before going to their new state. However, it will be difficult to take properties along. This is because it is difficult to know the type of house properties to carry along if the house issue has not yet been fixed.
When the time is right, the application letter is required by NYSC. This is very important because it will place your responsibility on NYSC. In case of eventuality at your home state, you can contact NYSC for assistance. For example, harassment by any law enforcement agency can easily be handled by NYSC by merely putting a call through to the local inspector. This privilege is lost if there was no such letter and if found out can lead to query. They will also take responsibility in case of accident or things like that.
The letter should be written with two weeks notice to travel. The title should read 'Permission To Travel.' The address should be of your PPA and should be addressed to the NYSC state coordinator through the NYSC zonal inspector (ZI) through the NYSC local inspector (LI) and finally through the PPA head. Give it to your PPA head for approval by signing on it before sending it to the LI office.
The day the leave will commence and end should be clearly stated.
Leave For Graduation/Convocation
The letter should be sent to the LI with two weeks notice. It should carry the title 'Leave For Graduation/Convocation Ceremony.' The address should carry that of the PPA and addressed to the NYSC state coordinator through the NYSC ZI through the NYSC LI and finally through the PPA head. The PPA head must approve it by signing before sending it to the LI office. The LI will send you a notification of approval of which you can get it at the LI office.
The day of the ceremony should be stated and attach any evidence of invitation card to the programme. Also include when you intend to travel and expected day of return.
Terminal Leave
Every CM is entitled to a two weeks terminal leave. However, a formal application letter is required. The title should be 'Request For Leave.' Using PPA address, it should be directed to the NYSC state coordinator through the NYSC ZI through the NYSC LI and finally through the PPA head. It must be signed by PPA head before sending it to the NYSC LI office.
Terminal leave is approve after working for six months in your PPA. The starting day and the end day should be included. And it should be sent at least two weeks before the commencement of the leave. However, for those who send it at the end of the programme, no need of coming back.
Medical Leave
When a CM is sick, they are entitled to sick leave. This is based on the discretion of the state coordinator as some CM form sick. CM who wish for a sick leave should write to the NYSC state coordinator through the NYSC ZI through the NYSC LI and finally through the PPA head. Explain the medical condition, where treatment is to be done and attach proof of illness. The proof include medical test results, payment receipt, etc. Admission cases must be in a government owned hospital unless otherwise referred to a private hospital by the government owned. However, it is not compulsory for it to be government own if you do not want to ask for a refund.
Submit the application letter to the NYSC LI after signing by the PPA head. However, the process is not very strict because some health conditions may require emergency. Such cases may be overlooked.
Maternity Leave
Pregnant CM are entitled to a twelve week or three months leave. This is approved after application with evidence of pregnancy. The title should go like 'Application For Maternity Leave.' The address should be that of your PPA and address to the NYSC state coordinator through the NYSC ZI through the NYSC LI and finally through the PPA head. The documents must be signed first by the PPA head before it will be attended to by NYSC.
Advantage Of Application
Those who applied for leave are exempted from weekly and general community development service (CDS) meeting. This is only during the period of the leave. They are also free from monthly clearance of which they will automatically be present on their dashboard. They will receive their full allowance as at when due.
Note: Before the journey, notice of approval should be sent to you which you can collect at the LI office. Those who failed to apply and miss any official activity of NYSC may get extension of service year with half pay. Also, there could be other reasons for leave which can be granted based on the discretion of the state coordinator.
