Olabisi Onabanjo University (O.O.U) Pharmacy Programme Review

Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) pharmacy programme
OOU logo
Olabisi Onabanjo University (O.O.U) is not very popular in south south of Nigeria. Honestly, the first time I heard of this school was in the year 2017. It is situated in Ago Iwoye, Osun state, Nigeria. It is owned and managed by the state government. It was founded on July 7, 1982 as Ogun state university abbreviated as OSU. It was recently renamed on May 29, 2001 in honour of chief (Dr.) Olabisi Onobanjo, whose effort as the then civilian governor of Ogun state gave birth to the university. But the old name is currently more popular than the new name.
OOU have many campuses with the main campus located at Ago Iwoye (permanent site, PS) and another campus called mini campus which house faculty of science before  it was moved to the permanent site in January 2013. The third campus has the faculty of agriculture which is in Aiyetoro, faculty of engineering is in the campus located at Ibogun. Faculties of pharmacy and basic medical sciences including the teaching hospital are in shagamu campus.

Vision

To be a centre of academic excellence where knowledgeable skills and values will be pursued relentlessly, therefore the university looks to provide the best quality education to its students.

Objectives

Teaching, research and community service

Mode Of Admission

OUU has three windows of admission. They are:
1. Joint Admission And Matriculation Board (J.A.M.B) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (U.T.M.E)
2. Pre-degree
3. Direct Entry

JAMB UTME

Aspirants need a minimum of five credits in English language, physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics from O'Level. And this should not be more than two sittings. The subject combination for Jamb is English language, biology, chemistry and physics. Aspirants who wish to study in OOU must score 180 in UTME and above. They accept candidates who choose them as first or second choice. Funny they even accept candidates who choose other institutions in Jamb. This is mostly obtainable in private institutions looking for candidates. Maybe as you read on you will understand better why things are like that here.
Candidates who meets the requirements above and qualify to buy the form can visit selected banks or using online transaction or an approved locations to purchase the form for N2500. That is not all as the form comes with an administrative charges which go for N5000. Some locations where the form is available are guest house, Ijebu-ode, Igbeda.
Candidates with valid Post UTME screening form and UTME result slip will be allowed into the examination screening centre. The screening examination is multiple choice questions (M.C.Q) of 50 questions to be completed under 30 minutes. The questions are drawn from the same subjects as Jamb UTME. 10 questions each from English language, physics, chemistry, biology and current affairs. A lot of persons say the questions are quite easy.
The number of Jamb candidates that choose pharmacy in OOU either as first or second choice is 1412 and 8 respectively. They provide about 60-70% admission to applicants. And remember even candidates who did not choose OOu can apply increasing the number of students who will sit for the lost UTME.

Pre-degree

Just as it is in other schools, the programme run through about 30 weeks. It is split into two semesters (called harmattan and rain semester) with each semester using about 15 weeks for lecture before a one-week examination. First-semester examination may contribute about 10 % to the total score at the end of the programme. Lectures are for every weekdays. The subjects are four which are English language, chemistry, physics, and biology.
The entry requirement is five credit in English language, Chemistry, biology, physics, and chemistry in not more than two sitting. The admission is based on merit and in proportion to the admission quota for the various faculties/colleges in the university. Candidates must register for Jamb UTME and score above 180. Candidates are also at liberty to choose other universities in the Jamb increasing their chances of getting admission. The final examination is CBT of multiple choice questions containing 50 questions to be answered  in one hour. Subject combination is the five science course which are English language, physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics.
Application fee is N8000. The application form must be submitted together with other relevant entry required documents. They are stamped and addressed to the pre-degree office. The school fees are N150000 while accommodation fee which is optional is N31000.

Direct Entry

The entry requirement for those who seek to gain admission through Direct Entry is similar to other universities in Nigeria. A minimum of second class (honours) lower division is all that it takes to be qualified to apply to OOU. They also accept A'Level of Joint University preliminary Examination Board (J.U.P.E.B) certificate and some other popular ones like Cambridge but not Interim Joint Matriculation Board (I.J.M.B) programme. Candidates are expected to possess three A-level passes in chemistry, biology/zoology and physics or Mathematics. Botany can be accepted in lieu of zoology.
There is a Jupeb programme in OOU. The programme runs for a period of 11 months with two semesters. Each semester also ends with examination organised first by OOU which constitutes about 30% of the total score and the one by Jupeb itself which constitutes the remaining 70 %. The lectures are for weekdays. The examination is theory and practical. Time for each paper is about 2 hours 30 minutes for the examination. A day may consist of 2 examinations for 2 subjects.
The entry requirement is five O'Level in English language, physics, chemistry, physics and biology at nit more than two sittings. The form goes for N15000. I don't know the school fees but it should be above N200000 considering the cost of school fees in this school. This is the main reason people are scared to school here and their entry requirement is low. Subject combination is English language, physics, chemist and biology.
Candidates are expected to buy JAMB DE form and failed their requirements. DE students who did not even choose OOU can apply for OOU DE form which goes for N25000 including an N5000 fee for administrative charges. The entrance examination is an MCQ using CBT question format. The pass to enter the screening Benue is the OOU post DE form.
