Rhinathiol Expectorant Carbocisteine 5% syrup for adults is a mucolytic (R: Respiratory System) expectorant. This medicine is intended for use in adults (aged over 15 years) who have had a recent respiratory disorder with difficulty expectorating (i.e. difficulty coughing up phlegm from the chest).

It is made by A. Nattermann & Cie, Germany but marketed by sanofi-aventis, France.

Composition Of Rhinathiol Expectorant Carbocisteine 5% Syrup For Adult

The active substance is:

Carbocisteine…5 g for 100 ml of syrup

The other ingredients are: sucrose, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), caramel coloring agent (E150), cinnamon essential oil, aromatic elixir, sodium hydroxide, purified water. One measuring cup (15 ml) contains 750 mg of carbocisteine, 6 g of sucrose, 0.2 g of ethanol and 97 mg of sodium. Ethanol content (v/v): 1.64°.

Contraindications

Do not take rhinathiol expectorant carbocisteine 5% syrup for adults: if you have a history of allergy to any of the ingredients of the medicine.

Appropriate Precautions

Special Warnings

Seek medical advice if you have:

1. thick and purulent phlegm or fever

2. a chronic (long-term) illness of the airways and lungs

3. a stomach or duodenal ulcer

Warning

The ethanol content of this medicinal product is 1.64° i.e. 0.2 g of ethanol per 15 ml measuring cup.

Use of this drug is dangerous in alcoholics and careful consideration should be given when administering to pregnant or breast-feeding women, children or high-risk populations such as patients with liver failure or epilepsy.

This medicine should not be used if you have fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (rare metabolic diseases).

If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, contact him/her before taking this medicine.

Precautions

When you take this medicine, you should always make an effort to cough so as to cough up phlegm from the chest.

Do not take any cough suppressants (intended to calm a cough) or medicines that dry up phlegm while taking carbocisteine treatment.

This medicine contains 6 g of sucrose per 15 ml dose of syrup. This should be counted as part of your daily intake if you are on a low-sugar diet or have diabetes.

This medicine contains sodium. This medicine contains 97 mg of sodium per 15 ml dose of syrup. This should be taken into account if you are controlling your salt intake. This medicine contains methylparaben (E218) and can cause allergic reactions.

Taking/using Other Medicines

Take into account the ethanol content. This medicine contains carbocisteine, as do some other medicines. Do not take them together, so that you do not exceed the recommended maximum doses.

Please tell your pharmacist or medical doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

Ask your pharmacist or medical doctor for advice before taking any medicine.

Dosage Of Rhinathiol Expectorant Carbocisteine 5% Syrup For Adults

Do not give this medicine to children aged less than 15 years.

• one measuring cup in the morning, at midday and in the evening, not during mealtimes, without exceeding 3 measuring cups per day orally

• one 15 ml measuring cup contains 750 mg of carbocisteine.

• Rinse the cup vell after use.

• Close the bottle tightly after use.

How Long Rhinathiol Expectorant Carbocisteine 5% Syrup For Adults Should Be Taken

The treatment duration should be short. Do not exceed 5 days of treatment without consulting your doctor. If you take more Rhinathiol Expectorant Carbocisteine 5% syrup for adults than you should: stop the treatment and consult your doctor as soon as you can.

Possible Side Effects Rhinathiol Expectorant Carbocisteine 5% Syrup For Adults

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Possible digestive disorders: stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea. If any of these occur, you should reduce the dose. Possible allergic skin reactions such as hives, itching, skin rash, swelling of the face (angioedema).

Some cases of fixed drug eruption (brown spots on the skin) have been reported.
