Nospamin is a drug given to infants, children and adults. It is used for treatment of colic infant, gastrointestinal discomfort, teething pain, reflux, and other stomach ailments in infants, children and adults. It is manufactured by Afrab-Chem Ltd, Lagos, Nigeria.

Nospamin contains homatropine methylbromide an antimuscarinic agent. It is a competitive inhibitor of the action of acetylcholine of the muscarinic receptor of autonomic effector sites innervated by parasympathetic nerves as well as being an inhibitor to some extent of the action of acetylcholine on smooth muscles lacking cholinergic innervation. It has a potent antispasmodic effect and minimal anticholinergic side effects.

Indications And Use Of Nospamin

Nospamin is used in the treatment of gastro intestinal spasms and as an adjunct in the treatment of peptic ulcer.

Dosage Of Nospamin

Infant doses are to be taken 10-15 minutes before feeding.

Does in according to body weight:

one drop per kg body weight 3-4 times daily

Doses according to age:

Pediatric Drop

Infants (up to 3 months): 2 - 4 drops 3 - 4 times a daily

3 - 6 months: 4 - 6 drops 3 - 4 times a daily

6 - 12 months: 6 - 9 drops 3 - 4 times a daily

Syrup

1 - 3 years: ½ teaspoonful (2.5ml) syrup 3 - 4 times a daily

3 - 6 years: one teaspoonful (5ml) syrup 3 - 4 times a daily

Tablet

6 - 12 years: one tablet 2 - 3 times daily

Adult: one to two tablet(s) 3 - 4 times daily

Or as directed by the physician

Side Effects Of Nospamin

These are typical of those observed after administration of other antimuscarinics. They include thirst, dilation of pupils (mydriasis), with loss of accommodation (cycloplegia) on long term use. Cardiovascular side effects such as bradycardia followed by related tachycardia with palpitation rhythms had been reported, following administration of toxic doses.

High doses often result in urinary urgency, difficulty and retention, constipation due to sudden drastic reduction in motility (paralytic ileus). Retrosternal pain may occur due to gastric reflux. Nospamin may cause dryness of the mouth and difficulty in swallowing.

Precautions

Treatment with Nospamin in acute myocardial infarction, thyrotoxicosis, cardiac insufficiency should be done with care. Not to be dispensed or repeated without medical prescription. If symptoms persist for more than two days, consult your medical doctor.

Contraindications

Myasthenia gravis, closed or narrow angle glaucoma.

Drug Interactions

Concominant administration with other antimuscarinic drugs such as atropine, hyoscine, antihistamines, butyrophenones, phenothiazine, and tricycle antidepressants may cause potentiation of pharmacological responses.
