Overview Of Gbomoro Mixture

Gbomoro is a liquid formulation containing paracetamol - 120Mg/5Ml and compound oil tincture - 0.276Ml/5Ml  as ingredients. Research work carried out in Enugu State of Nigeria claim that this herbal medication which contains mainly chloroquine, lactose and ascorbic acid. The manufacturer claims that gbomoro syrup is used for toothache, cold, headache, ear pain, joint pain, periods pain, fever, flu and other conditions. In Nigeria, gbomoro is used for teething symptoms and infant colic in children. The solution works by increasing the pain threshold and increases the blood flow across the skin, heat loss and sweating.

Tinctures are concentrated herbal extracts made by soaking the bark, berries, leaves (dried or fresh), or roots from one or more plants in alcohol or vinegar. The alcohol or vinegar pulls out the active ingredients in the plant parts, concentrating them as a liquid and acting as preservatives. Solvent concentrations of 25–60% are common, but may run as high as 90%. Other solvent are glycerol (glycerine), diethyl ether and propylene glycol but not safe for internal consumption. An example of popular tincture is tincture prepared from white willow bark and ethanol, containing salicin (from which salicylic acid-based products like aspirin are derived).

One major disadvantage of alcohol as a solvent is that it destroys some organic compounds such as polysaccharide and denature protein. In such cases, other suitable solvent is used.

There are so many types of tinctures today. There is no document as to the type in gbomoro mixture. However, most tincture is safe even for children. Given that the amount of tincture taken is very small (usually between 20-40 drops) the amount of alcohol consumed is negligible.
