Overview Of Molded Tablets, Hypodermic Tablet And Soluble/Dispensing Tablet

While most commercially available tablets are primarily prepared by compression, tablets can also be prepared by molding. Molded tablets are prepared by tablet machinery or manually by forcing dampened tablet material into a mold of any shape.

The formed tablet is then ejected from the mold and allowed to dry. Molding is generally reserved for laboratory and small-scale production. The commercial preparation of tablets by molding has been replaced by the tablet compression process.

Types Of Molded Tablets

There are two types of molded tablets. They are hypodermic and soluble/dispensing tablet

a. Hypodermic Tablets

These are one type of sterile preparations. In these, tablets are dissolved in the WFI or sterile water to inject before the actual injection in the hypodermic cavity. They are intended to be added in WFI of sterile water to form a clear solution which is to be injected parenterally. They are widely used by rural physicians due to its portability. It can be used for medicaments whose stability in water is very poor. Their use in this manner should be discouraged, since the resulting solutions are not sterile.

Advantage Of Hypodermic Tablet

1. They are not expensive

2. They are portable

3. They can be used when the API is not stable

Disadvantage Of Hypodermic Tablet

1. Resulting solution is hardly sterile

b. Dispensing Or Soluble Tablets

They are to be added to water or other solvents to make a solution containing a fixed concentration of API. Should contain no insoluble materials (including glidants, binders etc.), since they will be made into a clear solution. A material incorporated in dispensing tablets includes mild silver proteinate, bichloride of mercury and quaternary ammonium compounds. These tablets are highly toxic if taken orally by mistake. These tablets provide a convenient quantity of potent drugs.
