Overview Of Pharmaceutical Solid Dosage Form

Dosage form means a physical form by which drug molecules are delivered into the site of action. The solid dosage forms, which are solid in nature which contain one or more drugs for therapeutic effects and excipients like binders, sweeteners, coloring agents, etc. They can be use for different route of drug administration such as oral tablet, capsule, caplet, lozenges, etc. Others can be inserted into rectum and vaginal.

Excipients are those materials which are used in every dosage form. But it doesn't have any therapeutic effects or side effects.

Evaluation of Solid Dosage Form

Tablets are evaluated by a variety of methods.

1. Analytical determination of content: this is to take the weight of the drug and compare with the standard.

2. Dissolution: solid dosage form that has disintegrate does not necessarily mean it is available for absorption. A suitable solid dosage form should be able to dissolve.

3. Hardness: solid dosage form must be hard enough to withstand rough handling during production, packaging, shipment and storage.

4. Disintegration: good solid dosage form should disintegrate at the right time at the right environment. Experiment can be done whereby the environment is design to mimic the environment condition of the route of administration to test the disintegrate.
