There has been strong debate on the value of medical tests for intending couples. Some are of the opinion that such acts will not guarantee stability of the marriage. Others believe that it brings trust. One Amos Aumada, a marriage and family expert from the pan african University point out that a healthy person can fall sick after marriage. He asked if that should mean the end of the marriage.
Many people are looking at it from the angle of the couples alone. Let us look at it this way. Some of the tests suggested by medical healthcare practitioners are health conditions that can affect children if the couples want to have children. For the love of the children, these tests are vital.

Test That Affect The Couple

These tests affect only a couple. They can decide not to do it if they think it is not necessary. However, it is advisable to get this information down before tying the knot to avoid heartbreak.

Chronic Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions can last a lifetime. It is important for couples to know the states of their partner beforehand. That will enable them to prepare on how to handle it. It brings greater bond unlike hiding it and finding out in marriage. Example is diabetes. But some of these can only manifest at old age. A simple way to find out is a peep into family history. However, this is difficult.

Mental Health

This is very important especially for safety. With the rate of marital violence from both parties, it is important to know beforehand. Some mental health cases make their sufferer hyperactive and dangerous when it begins. This is especially important for couples who never dated for a while.

Fertility

Not all couples want a child. But the majority of couples make childbearing their number one priority of getting married. So it is important for both partners to go for fertility check. Sperm and semen quality assessment for male and pelvic scan for females can do this.

Disease

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) can be transmitted from one spouse to the other. Couples should not trust each other on these as they can be lifelong. If they can manage any existing one, good for them. That Is because some can be managed and the other spouse protected. Other infections too can be tested for. An example is TORCHES (Toxoplasmosis, Others-varicella zosters and Peru virus rubella cytomegalovirus herpes simplex and syphilis).

Test That Affect The Children

Children can inherit some medical conditions from their parents. Parents may just be carriers. It is important to save children from suffering by testing as a couple to prevent producing children with some particular defect.

Blood Group Test (Rhesus Factor)

Blood group tests are very important. Difference in blood groups between partners is not bad. It is the Rhesus factor that matters. Both partners must have the same Rhesus factor for the child to be safe. Rhesus positive and negative partner can cause Rhesus incompatibility between mother and child. This is not a problem with the first child. However, subsequent pregnancy can end up in miscarriage or death of the baby immediately after birth.

Gene Test

Humans have different genes. Sickle cell anemia is a disease condition that is characterized by the presence of a particular gene. Couples that want to prevent giving birth to children with sickle cells can do well to check their genotype before marriage. Some gene types predisposes some couples to having a sickle cell child.

Disease

Thalassemia is a disease whereby the red blood cells (RBC) have a big abnormal size that makes it difficult to live for a long time. The result is the sudden death of the RBC leading to anemia. This disease is inherited. TORCH, which includes Toxoplasmosis, Other (syphilis, varicella-zoster, parvovirus B19), Rubella, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Herpes infections, are some of the most common infections associated with congenital anomalies.
Children can inherit a medical condition from just one carrier. If both partners have a lot of medical conditions in their genes, which means that the children will be born with them. Couples should please consider all these before bringing children into the world that will suffer for what they don't know.
