Special Groups Corpers Can Join In NYSC Camp To Avoid Parade

The national youth service corps (NYSC) orientation camp is filled with various activities. Before swearing in ceremony, all prospective corp members (PCM) participate in parade. After that, corp members (CM) who are interested in other activities leave parade for those activities. The reason many CM leave is because they hate parade. At the mention of parade, they face a different direction.

Some CM participate in more than one activity. It all depends on how they can cope. But CM who wish to avoid any activity in camp can do well to join some special groups in the camp. They are excluded from most camp unofficial activities. Members of such groups are given tags which they can use to bypass the soldiers.
There are some groups that are found in every NYSC orientation camp. However, some are not so common. This post will focus on the basics.

Special NYSC Orientation Camp Groups

Red Cross

They tend to health emergency in camp. They are scattered around the camp and in places where activities are going on. They offer first aid before the arrival of medics or ambulance. Part of their activities is to sensitive camp officials and CM on health and safety measures during orientation camp and during service.
Anybody can join. However, if the number of CM joining the group is more than expected, they may restrict membership to only those with a medical degree. To avoid such a scenario, join from day one.
Red Cross officials train CM on how to carry out first aid. They use stimulation and practice with each other. They are life savers in camp as many CM do faint out of exhaustion. Some still do fake the fainting in order to avoid some strenuous activities in camp.

Orientation Broadcasting Service (OBS)

They disseminate information to CM within the camp. They start in the morning with the national and NYSC anthem before giving daily updates throughout the day. They announce when CM should wake up, go for food and when to sleep augmenting the bugle and whistle from the soldiers and Man O'War.
They are also the main group responsible for organisation of social activities in camp. They work with suppose CM that are comedians, actors, musicians, etc giving them platforms to showcase their service to the world. Although, some camps have a special group name 'social' for that. They entertained the audience with music from their equipment and help promote outstanding CM in camp.
Because of the large service they render, they need a lot of helping hands. Mass communication graduates are highly needed especially in areas of public announcement, radio show organisation, setting sound equipment, etc. Engineers are not left out as they work with others to make sure the technical aspect is well covered. They also need disk Jockey (DJ) and others too numerous to mention here.

Martial Arts

Martial arts

A very new group in camp, they tend to raise individual awareness of self defense. The group is not meant to teach CM how to fight but to defend. It is a fun group. I see them training all the time with their master. Within the three weeks, even the ladies who joined them had mastered some deadly moves.  Was wondering if their master can beat soldiers one on one.
The group can accommodate up to 50 CM. When others are doing other activities, they are busy shouting and demonstrating. It was then I understood the reasons they shout. The shout is to enable them take a move together in unison.

Band

From the very first day they start training. Soldiers source for CM with band skills from the very first day in camp. They organise them and start training. The band include big and small drums, saxophone and clarinet. They learn how to harmonize each instrument to achieve a good sound.
They choose a leader among themselves who will be dishing out instructions. However, they received training from the army. They play in swearing in ceremony and other special event within camp. They meant how to play the national and NYSC anthem.
Anybody can apply. However, they give preference to those who have some practical knowledge of this before. They are more busy than any other group.

Clinic

They are responsible for treating camp officials and CM in camp. Membership is strictly by profession. They include pharmacists, medical doctors, nurses, etc. Critical cases are referred to the hospital outside the camp for better health care. They may have an ambulance. In some cases, a full time medical doctor from a government hospital stays in the camp for three weeks period.

In some camps with few medical personnel in the camp, they will even want those who volunteer to spend all their time there without going to any other activities. However, if the number of volunteers are much, they may be pushing everyone to stick with the roster and go for other camp activities when not on duty.

Social

Social covers so many things. In some camps, socials are just like every other group. However, they are regarded as special groups in some camps. They participate in dance and drama. They promote culture.
Others not mentioned here are fire brigade and Man O'War group.
