States NYSC Orientation Camp Structural Design

Let me use this opportunity to introduce my readers to the national youth service corps (NYSC) orientation camp. There are 37 camps scattered around the country. They all have the same structures.

If you have never been to camp or you are planning to go soon, it may interest you to know the structures on ground. Everything is designed to make the three weeks comfortable.

NYSC Camp Structural Design

Security

The first thing is the NYSC security at the gate. There may be a security room. The security secure the camp day and night. They search every visitor and cars coming and going out. From the security post is a road leading up to the camp. The road may be beautified with flowers or plan with just a tarred road. From here, the camp welcomes you.

The design or what you may see from here is dependent on the architect of the camp.

Hostel

The camp is made up of hostels for camp officials and corp members (CM). There are male and female hostels. The male hostel is for male camp officials and CM. On the other hand, the female hostel is for female camp officials and CM. The two hostels may be separated or joined together. Inside the hostels are rooms with bed and foams for camp officials and CM. The hostels can have toilets and bathrooms or may be found outside. Running taps may also be provided.

Parade Ground

This is a vast expanse of land. At the front is a stand for important dignitaries to stand why parade is ongoing. The parade ground can be tarred. This is where all military drills and swearing in ceremony take place.

Camp Tent

Camp tent is designed for CM to receive long hours of boring lectures. They are made from canopies well secured to the ground. Rain and strong winds cannot bring it down if I am to exaggerate a little bit. There are many canopies with chairs.

Camp Market (Mami)

The camp market is a small market where camp officials and CM buy goods and services at exorbitant prices. This is because they pay for each stand and CM are not allowed to go out.

The market may be divided into stands. Some areas will offer only one type of service. The others will offer another one. This is the best way to make locating items easy. For example, food stand is in one area while stand for tailor is in another.

Camp Field

This is a place for sport activities. Football, relay races and other social activities are carried out here. Some camps have grass on the field while some have just sand. You will see the presence of goal post.

Volleyball Court

There is a court for volleyball tournament. It contains a net and floored court.

Table Tennis

Since table tennis court is a movable table, it can be found anywhere in the camp, especially in a secluded area away from other camp games.

Man O'War Garden

Man O'War

Is a reserve area for only Man O'War activities. It contains man made barriers CM are expected to bypass individually or collectively. The barriers all have name and a lesson for all. They represent life challenges and how to overcome them literally.

Camp  Kitchen

This is the place where the food distributed to camp officials and CM is prepared. With the help of CM, the food pass through different stages before it is shared among everybody.

Dining Hall

Very close to the kitchen is the dinning hall where CM and camp officials eat. It is big enough to accommodate at least half the population.However, anybody who wish to take their food to the hostels to eat is allowed.

Store

Store is where the various foodstuffs are stored until needed. The place is well fumigated against rodents and other pest to secure the food.

Camp Clinic

This is a mini clinic in the camp where corp pharmacists, doctors and other paramedics provide primary health care service (PHC) to camp officials and CM for free. The drugs and service is free. They only handle minor ailments and serious health challenges are referred and immediately transferred to a better hospital for further care at the cost to NYSC. They may have ambulance service.

Camp Office/Registration Center

This is the office NYSC officials stay during the day attending to CM NYSC related issues. They are more than 6 of such office.

Religious House

NYSC only approve three religious gatherings within the camp for the three months period. There are three buildings for the three gatherings. Each religious gatherings have their time of service and these are adequately captured in the NYSC orientation camp programme of activities.
