The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme is design to foster unity and sense of nationality. To achieve this, corp members are posted to various places in Nigeria far away from home. This kind of expose corp members to great security threat in their host community. However, corp members can stay safe during their service year. It depends on so many factors.
According to NYSC, all identified corp members must be protected at all times when there is chaos and trouble by security personnel. They cannot arrest any without the authorization of the state coordinator. Any complain from a corp member must be handled immediately by them without delay.

Immediately you get your place of primary assignment (PPA), you should make a little research about the place in camp. Ask people around on the nature of place and the lifestyle there. It will help prepare you mentally for the showdown.
Use gadgets like your phone to get some idea about the place. Use Google map or Earth to find it's location and how to get there. It is better to wait for fellowship or your PPA vehicle to convey you there if you have not been there before. They are safe and free. Move early so that you won't arrive there late.
Apartment
If your PPA did not provide an accommodation, you should rent an accommodation close to your PPA. This will reduce the distance you will cover when going to work which will increase your safety. If your PPA provide or you rent the accommodation, it should be safe. You should consider renting a place with high security features like fence and good locks. Consider the way to the market, place of worship and your PPA if they are safe.
It is good to rent an accommodation with fellow corpers. This increase your safety and also enable you to get information on NYSC from roommates.
Always lock your door and window when going out and at night. Don't leave any mark at all times to indicate when you are not around. Some people always put their shoes in the house whenever they are not at home. This is a simple way of telling people you are not in. It can be used against you. Tell your friends and neighbors where you are going to.
Lastly, locate the nearest police station/army barrack close to you. You should also do well to find out the location of a general hospital in the place. Take a walk around the area to see how it looks. This can be of help in times that need you to run and escape. Let Google map always guide you. However, this service is mobile and data compactible.

Immediately you settle down, get the contact of your local government inspector (LGI), zonal inspector (ZI) and your state coordinator. You can always call whenever you are in danger. Let their mobile numbers be in your speed dials. You can also add the number of the police in your phone. These numbers can be gotten from your state handbook given during orientation camp.
A very important number you should have and cram in your head is at least the contact of one or two family members that you can call when your phone is not available.

Very important for all corp members. You need to learn a little about the culture of that area and what their tradition is. Learn some basic words like greetings. Use it so that they will be happy with you. Get to know the use of some dangerous words that can indicate they want to strike it harm you or somebody.
Social Life
No one stop you from social life. However, avoid late night party. Do not use same route all the time. Above all, avoid using one particular spot while been observant. Do not engage in public argument especially those with political or religious affiliation.
To enjoy some level of security from security personnel, always carry with you some means of identification. Since your identity card can only save you when you bring it out, any of the NYSC 7/7 is highly recommended. The easiest that can help in such scenario is the NYSC cap. From afar, any security personnel can recognize you as a serving corp member. But the identity card is important.
And if you have gadgets, please do not flaunt them before your host. You may just be inviting trouble that does not belong to you.

National election comes once a year. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in partnership with NYSC management decided to use willing corp members to be part of INEC official. It is a good thing as they will be paid. However, due to the nature of the elections, many corp members don't participate. For those who took the bold step, here are some safety tips that can be of help.
