There is an increase in the number of pharmaceutical industries in Nigeria for some time now. This has lead to increase in employment in this sector. Companies employ persons from different field to man different departments. The department in each company is determined by the nature of their job. A pharmaceutical production company may have some different departments from a company that distribute imported products.

However, the following are the basic department pharmacist's can find themselves in.

Department In Pharmacy Industry

• Research And Development (R.D.A): This department may not be present in every industry especially here in Nigeria. It involve in innovation, introduction, and improvement of products and processes. To achieve the above aim and objective, professional from different fields come together. The head is usually a pharmacist with a PhD. New entry pharmacy will normally be given minor jobs like drug screening and characterization.
• Clinical Research: the lead from R&D must be tested in the clinical setting to prove their worth. This involve testing for efficacy and safety profile. The information will determine if the drug should be sent to National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (N.A.F.D.A.C) for approval. The department is also a mix of professional from different fields. The job requirements is same with R&D.
• Operation: once a drug have been approved by NAFDAC, it is now left in the hands of this department to design and development the drug to be able to achieve its therapeutic outcome as much as possible. In other to a achieve this, the drug must be stable during production, transport and storage. Other factors put into consideration is how to make the drug achieve acceptability among users by masking task, odour and colour without losing efficacy and safety. They handle the package, labeling, etc. Others in the unit operations, such as milling, granulation, coating, tablet pressing, and others.This job is mostly handled by pharmacist with different entry requirements depending on the unit. This department have a couple of units under it. This is the biggest department in terms of number of employees. Only few non pharmacist like pharmacy technician, pharmaceutical technologist, mechanical engineer, etc will be found here.
• Quality: After production, we want to know if the drug is up to NAFDAC and the company's standard. This department subject the drug to different test. Some of the test include friability, solubilities, etc before transferring the drugs to the warehouse. This department is strictly for pharmacist with laboratory technician and pharmacy technician playing a supporting role.
• Supply Chain Management: This department is saddled with lots of responsibility. The whole work of the other departments is futile if this department fails to achieve its goals and objectives. They are responsible for marketing the drug product. They do this by organizing seminars for healthcare professionals, advertise in major health blogs and health journals. That is not all. They employ sales representative who are familiar with different terrains who go out to also meet with healthcare professionals in their place of work. Each sales representative have managers who gives target.

The head of this department can come from a different did entirely. Some pharmaceutical companies prefer to employ those who study about business like economies or pharmacist with master degree in Business Administration. Most sales representative are pharmacist or related field. This makes it easy to understand how each drug made by the company works and how to explain it.
Besides these department, there are others such a security, cleaning and others which was not listed because pharmacist are not employed in those department. Also, some of these department can be merge to form one in some companies.
