Intern Pharmacist
Congratulations to you if you have gotten an internship center. Pharmacy interns are full time staffs of their company. They are expected to be treated like regular staffs with similar package. They work for twelve months excluding a month compulsory leave. The salary is based on the minimum wage use by the company. Working hours is about 8 hours a day with alternate weekends.

Since a pharmacy intern is a provisional registered pharmacist with a bachelor of pharmacy or doctor of pharmacy degree, his job description is more or less like that of a pharmacist. Interns perform a combination of duties under the supervision of a preceptor. Some of the duties may not be what pharmacist do but help to build the intern pharmacist up for bigger task ahead.
Each establishment have job description for their interns. However, majority of them perform similar task with different process.

Community Pharmacy

This is the sector that provides many opportunities for the intern pharmacist to showcase or leant valuable skills. These include valuable life skills. It will help to build a strong foundation when one wants to go for any business in the future. Both clinical skills, business skills and even engaging with government and non governmental organization is a valuable resource here.
To be able to get the best out of community pharmacy, the intern have the following as part of his/her job description;
1. Interpreting prescription/physicians order
2. Monitoring of sales (Inventory) including out of stocks, low stock, about to expired drugs and expired drugs
3. Patient interview and counseling including follow up
4. Drug therapy and pharmacokinetic monitoring, review and intervention
5. Accurate supply and dispensing of medication
6. Provide verbal and written drug information to patients, physicians, pharmacist and other staffs
7. Paper presentation on new trends in the management of diseases.
8. Documentation of intervention
9. Monthly stock taking
Others may include;
a. Suggest new ideas that can enhance better service delivery
b. Part of sales including collection payment
c. Record keeping
d. Completion of insurance forms
d. Basic diagnostic test like blood pressure check and old glucose level check.

Hospital Pharmacy

The hospital pharmacy interns have less job attach to the work. Since the hospital have a larger staff, the bulk of the work may have been shared among the other staffs. For example, the account department handles payment from clients. However, the clinical aspects is still there. Their jobs can be summarise below;
1. Interpreting prescription/physicians order
2. Patient interview and counseling
3. Drug therapy and pharmokinetic monitoring, review and intervention
4. Monitoring (inventory) of sales
5. Accurate supply of medication
6. Provide verbal and written drug information to patients, physicians, pharmacists and other staffs
7. Monthly at ok taking
8. Paper presentation on new trends on management of common diseases
9. Costing of drugs

Industry Pharmacy

Interns pharmacist assist in the manufacturing of sterile and non sterile products. The intern will be rotated round all the units. Their duties include;
1. Maintaining control records of manufactured items
2. Preparing large batch and small vines extraporaneuos preparations
3. Preparing intravenous additives and parenteral nutrition.

Due to the fact that there are many units in the industry, it will be difficult for the interns to grab all that happens there except the rotation was within just two or u so units. In that case, the intern will mostly work in the production unit helping in doing research. In this unit, he do more of errand boy. However, in the production room, what happens is helping in mixing, calculation and other technical activities.

Organisation


Pharmacy interns that are fortunate to get in places like National Agency For Food And drug Administration And Control (NAFDAC) don't stress too much. They go out with their senior colleague to lock up shops of defaulters, carry out research in their small labs of some foods or drugs if they meet standard. They also help out in some technical aspects such as operating computers, help in analysis of certain data's.
