Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK Pharmacy Programme

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka is a federal university with its main campus situated in Anambra state capital, Awka. The other campuses are located in Nnewi and Agulu. It was established in 1991.
However, it started off as anambra state university of technology abbreviated as ASUTECH. ASUTECH was established in 1980. At this time, it was serving the whole of Anambra and Enugu state until the 2 states were separated. It was made a federal university in 1992. The faculty of pharmacy is at the Agulu campus.

UNIZIK Pharmacy

The pharmacy programme in UNIZIK kick start in 2006/2007. It was pioneered by Vice Chancellor (V.C) prof. Ilochi Okafor (SAN) and the dean is Prof. Boniface C.E Egboka, FAS. The school of pharmacy has three modes of entry. They are:

1. Pre science

2. Direct entry

3. Joint Admission And Matriculation Examination (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

1. Pre Science

The programme is similar with that of Delta State University, Abraka. The sale of pre science form cost ₦8000. Successful applicants are selected based on a grading system that make use of O’ level result. There is no entrance examination. They give admission also based on first come first serve.

The programme has two semester ending with an examination. The school fees is for a session.  Two school fees are paid annually. Candidates with one o’ level result pay ₦44000 while those with two sitting pay ₦45000. Online registration is ₦500.

2. Direct Entry

Fortunately, UNIZIK is among federal universities that accept and run Joint University preliminary examination board (JUPEB) programme. The form is ₦15000. The school fees for the programme is a whooping ₦70100 with an additional ₦500 for online registration.

After buying Joint Admission Matriculation Board (J.A.M.B) direct entry form, the next step is to buy the UNIZIK direct entry form which cost ₦2000. Candidates will be administered a screening exercise after which successful candidate will be shortlisted.

3. Post UTME

The cut off mark for pharmacy from JAMB examination is 200. The screening form is ₦2000. The number of candidates that apply for UNIZIK pharmacy yearly is about 3600 with first choice and 80 candidates as second choice.

Undergraduate Pharmacy Students

Admitted students pay acceptance fee which is ₦16500. Biometric capturing and prosessing fee is ₦7500. There are two methods of paying it. Whichever suits the candidate is legal.

The actual school fees is about ₦70000. However, peripherals such as accreditation, GST- ₦7000, year book and shirt - ₦5000 can increase total cost. In total, year one expenses is about ₦120000. Subsequent years will be cheaper like ₦21000. Bank charges is ₦4000.

Accommodation

There are male and female hostels in the school. The price is same irrespective of the campus it is located or the hostel. They are about ₦33000 in price for a year. Is like some private hostels are within the school premise such as Emelda hostel - ₦85000 for first year and ₦70000 for subsequent years, holy family – ₦65000 for first year - ₦60000 for second year.

Outside school hostel is between ₦50000 through ₦100000 for single and bed sitter. Permsit, aroma and temp hostel cost somewhat between ₦60000 to ₦180000.

Post graduate

This part is very complicated because I was not able to get concrete information. However, this was what I was able to deduce from the several sources of information available to me for now.

The postgrdauae form cost varies between Postgrdaute diploma, masters, phd. The PG admission form sell for ₦1000. There is a separate screening form. PGD screening form sells  fo ₦5000 while maters and phd cost ₦7000.

The school fees for PGD is ₦73200 for year one students using one sitting and ₦75200 for those using two sitting. The school fees put into consideration if the student is using two sitting or not. Masters and PhD also have different school fees for candidate with one and two result. Each semester have  different fee. For example, when first semester for those with one result is ₦115200, their second semester is ₦1132000. On the other hand, first semester for those with one result is ₦117200 and ₦115200 for second semester. Year two school fees is ₦107500 irrespective of the number of sitting use.

The school fees is very high when other expenses of which some are compulsory are added which is a must to pay like project defence, proposal. The cost is about ₦82500. The other expenses which are not compulsory include cost of adding or dropping a course, which can be incurred by the student in certain conditions.
