The Introduction Of Compulsory Internship Pre-registration Examination For Pharmacist

It is no longer news that the regulatory body of pharmacy practice in Nigeria, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (P.C.N) has mandated all new pharmacist who wants to register as pharmacist to write an examination after their one year internship training.
This was introduce in the year 2015. The objective of this examination is to ascertain the level of knowledge, attitudes, and skills acquired to practice pharmacy in Nigeria without endangering public health.

To submit the filled out form, include form P endorsed by your preceptor. Two recent passport sized photograph with the stamp and signature of your preceptor where you did internship.
Photocopies of statement of result from the school, certificate of experience and certificate of provisional registration shall be submitted with the bank draft used for payment or online evidence of payment.
For those who schooled abroad, the evidence of FPGOP must be included.
The examination will focus on;
Note: Both the question paper and answer booklet must be submitted together.

Eligibility To Participate
- All pharmacy who have completed the compulsory one-year internship training in an accredited center.
- Applicants must have their certificate of experience from their preceptor i.e. the head of service where they did their one-year compulsory internship training.
- Pharmacy students who graduate in a foreign institution must in addition to their compulsory Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Orientation Program (F.P.G.O.P) partake of the examination.
How To Apply
Eligible candidates who seek to write the examination are to go to PCN website to buy and download the form. Alternatively, they can get it from PCN office after making payment at the bank.To submit the filled out form, include form P endorsed by your preceptor. General Notice
There are various aspects of pharmacy such as community practice, hospital pharmacy. The examination will cover all aspects of pharmacy practice. Unfortunately, most interns work in just one center for their training. This may be a hiccup in passing the examinations. However, the council decided to add something that will make the profession an all-round one. They are:- There shall be optional tutorials for all interns.
- The standard for internship centers shall be harmonized with the competences the interns are expected to have.
- The pharmacy practice is experience is needed in personal practice, public health, organisation and management, personal professional management, drug production and quality assurance.
- All interns should familiarize themselves with industrial practice, hospital profession, community pharmacy and administrative practice.
The examination will focus on;
- Hospitals: secondary and tertiary health facilities
- Community pharmacy (rotation required)
- Industry practice (rotation required)
- Regulatory agencies (rotation required)
- Academia (rotation required)
Information About The Examination
- The exams shall hold every March and October every year.
- Form can be downloaded online at PCN website or collected at any PCN offices nationwide.
- There is a prescribe fee to be paid at the bank either through online transaction before download or at the bank with bank draft before collection of the form.
- All pharmacy should already know that the pass mark would be 50 %.
- The examination will last a period of 2 hours with 200 multiple-choice questions.
- There will be six centers each year to be rotated all within the six-geo zones of Nigeria.
- Invigilators from the pharmacy school selected shall coordinate the activities of the students. However, there shall be the presence of two external examiners of which one will be from PCN while the other shall be selected randomly from any school of pharmacy.
- Lastly, the examination cannot be written more than four times. Failure to pass it, a refresher program will be organised by PCN for such student

Offenders Of Any Of The Laws During And After The Examination
Several type of offences shall carry different penalties, which were listed and quiet much. It ranges from punishing invigilators and external examiners who in any way aids any student. In addition, students who defaulted also have their own if caught such as suspension for two years.After Examination Anomaly
- In the case of missing the examination, it is considered a failure on the part of the student. However, if after one week of the examination, a student came out to complain with valid reason with evidence; such a student will be allowed to write the next examination without the rest process.
- In case the result came out and was faulted by any student, such ones can apply for a remark. This must be done within a space of two weeks after the result have been released. However, he alone bears all the cost by paying the same amount for buying the form.
