Is Indomie Noodles Good For Ulcer Patient

There is no literature review on the effect of indomie noodles on peptic ulcer. However, we can deduce the likely relations and its effects from what we already know.

Ulcer is a sore on the lining of either the stomach or intestine. Foods do not cause ulcers. However, some foods trigger ulcer pains and reduce the healing process.

Indomie instant noodles are a type of pre-cooked noodle, usually sold in individual packets or cups and bowls. After the noodles have been made in the factory, they are steamed, dried and packaged.

Each package contains a block of dried noodles as well as a packet of flavoring and/or oil for seasoning. Buyers cook or soak the block of noodles in hot water with the flavoring before eating it.

Typical ingredients in the noodles include flour, salt and palm oil. The flavoring packets generally contain salt, seasoning and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Excess sodium does not cause ulcers. It makes the ulcer worse.

A 43 g (a serving) pack of noodles contains about 861 mg of sodium. That is, a 70 g pack of noodles will have about 1600 g of sodium. Let us look at the maximum daily sodium needs of an individual.

Adults should eat no more than 6g of salt a day (2.4g sodium) – that's around 1 teaspoon. Children aged: 1 to 3 years should eat no more than 2g salt a day (0.8g sodium).

Using adults as reference, most adults eat more than 200 g of noodles in a sitting. That will increase the amount of sodium consumed. This makes noodles bad for ulcer patients.

Another context of indomie noodles that calls for concern is the sugar. A serving contains about 0.8 g. This is far below the maximum daily dose.

Adults should have no more than 30g of free sugars a day, (roughly equivalent to 7 sugar cubes). Children aged 7 to 10 should have no more than 24g of free sugars a day (6 sugar cubes).

Looking at its sugar content and maximum daily need, sugar in it is in the safe zone. Other ingredients seem to be safe in the ulcer.
