Why NYSC Reject Skirt For Female Corp Member

For some years now, different groups especially Christian have been clamouring for the inclusion of skirts for corps members during the national youth service corps (NYSC) programme. They cite immorality and indecent dressing as the reason for the call. 'How can a female put on a male attire?' they wonder. They claim that at inception, female corp members were allowed to use skirts.

According to NYSC, the scheme has maintained one dress code since May 22, 1973 when it was established, devoid of ethnic, religious or gender bias.

Although the NYSC Act does not clearly state what the uniform should be, it only said the corps members should accept and wear whatever is given to them. Section 3(1)(ix) of the NYSC bye-laws states that every corps member shall “wear the various uniforms provided for the activities.” It also says: “Any member who refuses, fails or neglects to comply with this rule shall be tried by the Camp Court and, if found guilty, be liable to be decamped and sent out of the Orientation Camp.”

Why Trousers For Female Corp Members

According to NYSC, trousers are best fit for NYSC activities. Since the orientation camp is like military training, it will be difficult for females in trousers to carry out their assigned duties. Activities like climbing, jumping, playing baseball, football, basketball, etc are more comfortable on trousers. This is not far from the truth. Most NYSC activities are rigorous.

However, the uniform for female soldiers in many countries includes skirts. These skirts are worn for some special events that does not require combat. The NYSC could have introduced skirt for some special NYSC activities like clearance and community development service meeting.

Why Skirt For Female Corp Member

People against trousers advocating for skirts always quote Deuteronomy 22:5: “A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this.” They fail to realise the long history of trousers. There are trousers for females as well trousers for male. If they say trousers are indecent, they have to look back at history where men used to wear wrappers. Trousers were never part of our culture.

In terms of decency, trousers are far better. They cover up a lady. This cannot be said of skirts as they can expose females to indecent exposure.
