Difference Between Identical And Fraternal Twins

Theory behind identical and fraternal twins
Twins
There are two types of twins which are fraternal and identical twins. Twins birth have always fascinated mankind for long. It dates back to history. The first appearance of twins in the Bible was the story of Esau and Jacob. They were born same day but different appearance. One was hairy and the other was not.
The theory behind twins is yet to be known to scientist. However, they have been able to come up with some few explanation as to how twins birth come about. You will learn one or two things today.
For a woman to get pregnant, one of her ovary release one egg cell once a month. The egg live for only 12 hours. It takes just one healthy sperm to fertilize it. After fertilization, it implants itself on the walls of the uterus and grow to be a baby.

How Twins Form

There are two types of twins. Twins that look physically alike and same gender are called identical twins. Identical twins cannot be of two gender because the fertilize egg carry only one chromosome. The other type called fraternal twins don't look alike physically and can be of different gender. On very few occasions will they have similar physical appearance. The only way to authenticate the type they belong to when physical appearance is similar is the use of DNA test.

Identical Twins

Identical twins form from a single fertilized egg called ovum. The ovum splits into two equal half before implantation to the uterus. Each of the growing ovum develop its own placenta and then grow independently. However, identical twins share same genetic makeup.

The reason for the split of the first ovum is still a big misery to doctors around the world. Many theories have been postulated with no one to prove beyond doubt or carry any meaningful weight. To make matters worst, statistics have shown that identical twins spread across the world evenly. It occurs in every culture, country and nationality. The age of the mother does not matter. No family history have contributing factor.

Fraternal Twins

Fraternal twins on the other hand occur when a woman produce more than one egg in a month and each got fertilize by different sperm. The number of egg can rise up to eight or more but the highest recorded number is eight. Some theories says that sometimes, the two ovum can split into two to make two identical twins. That is two will look alike and the other two will lokk similar. But incase where fraternal twins look very much alike like in identical twins, only DNA test can say if it is fraternal or identical. This is because fraternal twins share half of DNA information but identical share same genetic makeup. Some believe that the reason for the close resemblance of fraternal twins is because one egg split before two different sperm fertilise them. But no body have proven an egg split just before fertilization.
Scientist have proven some theories why hyperovulation occur. Looking at it critically, it is possible to predict future mothers of fraternal twins. Let's look at it.
For a woman to release one egg for a month, different hormones play different regulatory roles. The major hormone is estrogen. If the right amount of estrogen is produce and release to the target receptor in the month, the ovary release one egg. However, some factors can trigger an increase in the amount of estrogen release in a month. This can lead to the release of one or more eggs. The big question now is "what are the factors that can cause this to happen to the estrogen level?"

Factors Associated With Hyperovulation

Gene

For women with a family history of fraternal twins, there is a possibility she may give birth to twins. Some people say it always skip one generation. What they are implying is that if a woman is twins, she or her siblings will not give birth to twins but their children will. This is not true as twins have given birth to twins.

Birth Control Pills

The body wants to produce eggs every month. Birth control pills prevent this from happening. The day the drug is out of the system, the body in an excited state will mass produce estrogen. This can trigger the release of multiple eggs in a month. However, scientist believe this only happens when the birth control pills have been taken for consecutive six months and above. Some are also of the opinion that irregular use of these pills can also cause it. That should be right also considering how the body reacts to balance it's biochemical self.

Fertility Treatment

Some fertility drugs induce the release of egg. At the right dose, it can induce both ovaries to release their own egg under one month. This become more common for those who abuse it by overdosing on it. A good example is the drug clomiphene citrate.
During Artificial Insemination, the woman will be place on some fertility drugs. This is a similar case with the above.

Invitro Fertilization (IVF)

In other to be sure of pregnancy, doctors induce the woman to release more than one egg, fertile them and check for the most viable. They then insert two or more of the fertilized egg (ovum) in her. In some cases, more than one grow to become a baby.

Age

Women produce one egg every month. But just before women gets to menopause, their body tend to release mkrw than one egg every month to make sure they produce all the children they want to before that time. In some cases, more than one egg is release in a month. This open them up for twins pregnancy. Girls below 30 years hardly give birth to twins but very common above 30 especially as from 35 years.

Height

Take it or leave it, I know this even before reading. I have never seen a short woman with twins. It is obvious the body knows it will be difficult to accommodate twins in the small space provided by short women. This makes tall woman candidate for twin pregnancy. The taller the woman the greater the chances of giving birth to twins.

Obesity

Fat woman tend to have greater estrogen level. This should explain it all. Besides, they have enough  energy to carry more than one child at a time reducing the likelihood of malnutrition to the growing baby.

Race And Diet

From world statistics, Africa have the greatest per cent age of twins. West Africa dominate the rest of Africa. Nigeria rules in West Africa and Igbo ora in South west Nigeria have the highest number of twins birth in the world. In fact, a visit to the simple community is a big welcome sign post with the inscription "the land of twins."
To understand the secret to this community giving birth to twins, a medical doctor in Lagos state teaching hospital did some investigation and found out that they eat cassava and yam alot. The local yam contains alot is phytoestrogen. Remove the 'phyto' and you get 'estrogen.' This is the same hormone responsible for the releasing egg every month.

Number of previous pregnancy

First pregnancy hardly produce twins. Maybe the body believe it is not yet able and capable to deliver twins. After like one or two birth, twins start coming. It is a very common thing to witness a woman who wish to end child bearing with the last child producing twins.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding do prevent ovulation, that is, the release of egg. However, stopping breastfeeding can trigger the release of estrogen in quantity that can cause a spike in egg release.

Non proven Cause

The next reasons I will list here have no strong experimental or strong theoretical backings to add to the above list.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is useful to pregnancy woman to prevent neural tube defect in newborn. However I taking folic acid before birth is believe to increase the release of eggs. No concrete evidence yet.

Dietary Products

These products have been talked to increase chance software hyperovulation. It may be true but subject to controversies and further evidence.
From the above, we can deduce that male twins or men born in family of twins have no effect on giving birth to twins in their own family.
Note:
Gestational of twins is 38 weeks against 40 weeks for singleton. The reason is that there is nutritional imbalance unlike when it is singleton. To prevent further nutritional deficit, the children come out on time to receive better care.
Approximate one quarter of twins are mirror images of themselves. That is right side of one is same with the left side of the other.
You cannot tell a twin to be fraternal or identical at birth. It takes years or DNA test at birth to know.
