Simple Course in Pharmacy
Pharmacy school is difficult. This is mostly due to the lecture schedule and bulky materials couple with less time for preparation. The examinations are hard. It require hours of dedication and self service to blaze through successfully. However, few courses on a lighter note are not as difficult as the others. This can be a difficult course for others in other departments.
A course may be hard or difficult for one and easy for the other. This post try to bring together those course majority of students feel was simple. This list is excluding borrowed courses like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc and school courses like general studies. This I consider easy on their own.

Majority of the simple courses I will highlight here were to us not simple back then. This is because each level throw at us a different package. We only realise how easy some course were only when we have gone to other level. Majority of the simple courses fall in year two and final year.

Difficult Courses In Pharmacy

Pharmacognosy: Introduction to pharmacognosy and organic used drugs

This department is considered the hardest by many students. This is the first topic encountered by all pharmacy student from this department. This is the least until graduation. We felt it was not simple then. We later confirmed it was some years later. It focus on classification of medicinal plants, nomenclature, taxonomy, plant design, their morphology, microscopy, and chemical characteristics. The difficult part of this course may be the aspect that have to deal with study of selected plants.
There is practical class to back it up.

Pharmacognosy: Separation techniques in pharmacy

This made the list. The reason is because in the days, this course was touched by other departments at different level. We did a little in pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy. Armed with these knowledge, it was like a work over in pharmacognosy. It may not be so if it is encountered in the first year of study. In fact, the story may be terrible.
This course is more on ways different plant extracts can be separated with minimal efforts, and increase yield. It touch on the principles involve in all the separating techniques. The word chromatography will be the order of the day.

Pharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy: Introductory pharmaceutics

I still remember so many things about this lecture. Maybe it was fear of the volume of material that push some of us into studying hard for this course. My 80 leaves note book was exhausted and I have to pair the notes with another of my note that is still empty. However, the more we read, the more we realise how simple it was.
The course is all about dosage form. At our age and level, we all have swallowed drugs, or taking injections. So the material were kind of self explanatory. It also talks about unit and dosage calculation, the different types of formulation and pros and cons. This was when we were introduced to the word excipient.

Pharmaceutical microbiology: General microbiology

This department in general looks easy. Never underestimate them. Their requirement during examination is very high. Maybe that is why only one their course made it to list.
The only course under this department that resemble simple is sterilisation techniques. It touches on the principles, properties, mode of action as well as conditions suitable for the different sterilisation techniques. It so highlight the implication of the various techniques on drugs and instrument.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry: Principles of Drug Development and Design

Pharmaceutical chemistry would not have made this list at all if not for this course. The course is interesting. It was the first course throughout our school life that first of all touch on the practical aspects of the profession. That was in year four before the others came.

It reveals the individual stages of drug discovery in the laboratory either deliberately or by mistake. Gradually to the point the drug goes to clinical trials. Not also forgetting how some drugs can be modified in the laboratory and the use of salts in the form of prodrugs.

Clinical pharmacy and Pharmacy administration: Communication skills

This is the easiest department. But wondering why just two of its course appearing here? Generally, all the course in this department are easy except for one or two. But the poor organization and some other factors cause them more spot.
Communication skills is very necessary and essential for a pharmacist. It is needed during patient interview and counselling. This calls for good listening, written, observation and speaking skills. This also goes on about how to get information from patient using different types of questions approach.

Clinical pharmacy and Pharmacy administration: introduction to clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical care

This course is a kind of continuation from the one above. This time around, it discusses on terminologies and principles of pharmaceutical care. It goes on explaining assessment techniques a pharmacist can employ during patient care. This also include knowledge of some biochemical test and its effects on drug choice. Drug therapy problem is like a ringing tone in this course. No examination is complete without asking a question on it.
