Most clients walk into the pharmacy demanding for a specific type. Most adults prefer the white tablet. They believe the white is more effective when compared to the coloured tablet. Some of the reasons they gave is that the sugar added must have degraded some of the potency of the coloured while others claim the coloured tablet is meant for children. Are the reasons true? Let us see.

Flavoured Drugs

Most drugs taste awful. Awful tasting drugs is a turn off for many persons including adults. To encourage persons to take their medications (adherence), drug manufacturing companies device means of masking the taste of drugs to a degree agreeable to people. Unfortunately, there is no cheap method of masking bitter tasking drugs. This translate to more cost for the drug. Even the masked drugs of adults is not agreeable to children. They want even more sweeter drugs. Drug manufacturing companies decides to make them even sweeter. This makes them more expensive than adult doses. But in all, they make sure the flavour does not take away the efficacy of the drug.

Coloured Drugs

Why will a company decides to change the colour of a drug? Simply put, to enhance medication adherence. I love blue colours. Guess I will always remember to take my drug if the colour turns out to be blue. Same way we all have a colour we fancy and drugs in those colours are appealing to us to take. This is more evident in children who make like to play with colourful drugs and may even help the giver push the drug into the mouth. Drug manufacturers know this and so incorporated it into drug production. The result is your coloured tablet or syrup. This also add to the overall cost.

Vitamin C Tablet

The white vitamin C is 100mg. This is same with the coloured flavoured tablet which is also 100mg. What this means is that both will work same way. The colour and flavoured added is to encourage medication adherence. The colour and flavour does not reduce the efficacy in any way. There is no evidence that the colour and flavour did reduce its efficacy. Both come at same cost. The reason is simple. Masking vitamin C tablet both the colour and flavour is simple as compared to other drugs.
