Experiments In Pharmaceutical Microbiology Laboratory In Nigeria
Petri dish with inoculation in PMB lab |
All the above functions of a pharmaceutical microbiologist can be acquired from classes and laboratory experimental classes. PMB laboratory is divided into pharmaceutical Microbiology main laboratory and sterile/production laboratory or room.
Main Pharmaceutical Microbiology Laboratory
PMB laboratory do not need a lot of equipment for experimental classes. However, this is one laboratory with so much apparatus ranging from petri dish to spatula. This is the reason why someone who enters for the first time may think the laboratory is non-functional. Most of the experiments carried out in this laboratory require waiting for days before results can be gotten and recorded.Experiments
In this laboratory, students learn about how to identify some common microorganisms using certain methods such as the reaction of some microorganisms to some chemicals. This reaction is standard and the result will prove the presence or absence of the test organism. Identification can also be done using physical attributes as seen under a microscope e.g., shape of a microorganism under a microscope will show if the organism is of a specie according to a specified standard mostly from a pharmacopoeia.Read Also: Different Examination Method Under Pharmacy School In Nigeria
Intracellular and extracellular susceptible of agents on certain microorganisms is another very important experiments. This is what Laboratory do when they want to test patients for a disease and the most effective drug for the specie or microorganism causing it. The methods are much and takes time learning about all. The students are expected to culture or train some species of microorganism. In other cases, the microorganisms are bought from a company that specializes in culturing them or cultured in the laboratory by the laboratory technologist before each experiments.
The microorganisms are culture in a bottle contains nutrients that will provide energy source for the microorganisms before the main experiments. Some quantities of the microbes are transferred into a petri dish contains some dose of a test potential drug or a known drug. The rate of multiplication of the microbe is measured by observing the area the microbes covered. Individual microorganisms are not visible with the naked eyes. However, a colony of them will show as spots on the petri dish. This experiments can be done using different agents or same agents with different dose. When the same agent is used, the dose that will hinder the growth of the microorganism will be noted. On the other hand, when the agent is different, the most active becomes the one that will had the most inhibition.

Sterile Pharmaceutical Microbiology Laboratory/Room
Experiments on how to produce a sterile product excluding it from microorganism using the different techniques available. The final product most not contain any contamination from dust to microbes.Experiments
Experiments in this laboratory are those involve in production of sterile pharmaceutical products. The basics is that students learn how to carry out a production using simple hygiene. Good examples of products are eye drops which are needed to be sterile at all times. Others are ear drops, creams, etc. One can say this laboratory is technically closely related to Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy (P.C.T). These special drugs must be produces to be compatible with the tissues of the body if they are to be marketed.
