Medical Biochemistry Laboratory For Pharmacy students In Nigeria

Medical Biochemistry Laboratory for pharmacy students
Medical Biochemistry Laboratory
Medical Biochemistry, another interesting course under basic medicals embedded in pharmacy school curriculum in Nigeria. It is among the three medical courses, which pharmacy students offer in school. Majority of the course content learned in the laboratory will be used in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry (P.C.H) laboratory in the future.

Just like the other two basic medical courses, it covers a period of one year divided into two semesters. It is comprised of theory and laboratory practical class. To understand what goes on the laboratory, let us take a peep on what the theory aspect is all about.

Medical Biochemistry is a course that deals with the study of life in its molecular form. It tries to see life in form of a chemical entity and not a biological being. This is made possible since life is made up of matter. The simplest unit of matter is the atom. To study atom, we need chemistry.

From the theory, we can see that the laboratory practical’s will base solely on observable changes. The laboratory is built just like a pharmaceutical chemistry laboratory. It covers the principles of biochemical analysis and assay.

A Medical Biochemistry Laboratory

In most Medical Biochemistry, you will encounter the same basic apparatus and design. The experiments were based on chemical analysis and reactions. It takes the form of mixing a biological chemical with standard chemicals that will produce a defined result. The result can be some form of colour change, bubble, the precipitate formed etc. This is used to identify a compound.

To illustrate using a practical life experience, a urine sample to test for the presence of sugar using some biochemical analysis can be carried out by a biochemist.

Medical Biochemistry Experiments

Some of the experiments common for pharmacy students include:

  • Ph
  • Identification of compounds such as carbohydrates, lipids, fats, oils etc.
  • Compound conversion such as glucose to fructose
  • Few titration
