Why Do We Faint
Fainting
Fainting is a word that evokes fear in the minds of Nigerians who usually attribute such occurrence to lack of blood in the body of the sufferer. In other words, people who are believed to lack blood are more prone to it.
They usually feel surprised when a rather healthy individual suffers such ill-fate hence link some form of spiritual connotation to it. To them, a healthy person that has a lot of blood is the fat persons. However, today shall be the day we all will know the truth.

Fainting is said to be blacking out which is temporary loss of consciousness accompanied by loss of muscles. This can lead to fall out and weakness. However, not all faint lead to fall. It can be a fraction of a second. Fainting can also be due to some ailments. However, the discussion is for all of them.

Why Do We Faint?

It is a function of the brain. The brain require oxygen and sugar regularly to sustain itself. For fainting to occur, either one or both substances are in short supply. The blood that carries these nutrients to the brain regulates the supply.

We can total the causes of fainting to be into three; blood, sugar and oxygen. So what can cause an irregular supply of these three basic nutrients to the brain? Let us find out

Blood

The blood is the fluid that supplies the two nutrients to the brain. There are certain factors that can limit the blood flows to the brain. They are analysed below

There are times the heart may fail to pump blood. This could be due to certain factors such as certain medications, disease states, etc. the heart pump rate is controlled by electrical impulses. Once this impulse is disturb, the heart pumps either too fast or too slow. Both conditions are dangerous. If the heart pumps too fast, there will not be enough time for the heart to collect necessary nutrients before being force out into the body circulation. On the other hand, a slower pump will lead to a high volume of blood to be pumped out by the heart, which the heart may not be able to pump round the body due to the high volume or weight because it had exceeded its maximum capacity.  Very close organs to the heart will get the blood supply of which the brain may not be among the benefactors.

Blood vessels do not have enough tone to maintain blood pressure to deliver the blood to the brain. Some diseases are culprit to this and some medicines too

Not enough blood or blood fluid within the blood vessels or a combination of reasons

Sugar

Sugar provides kind of energy to the brain. When the supply is cut short, the brain may loss its function and end up leading to fainting. Sugar level is affected by food intake, insulin level and other factors that affects sugar level in the body

Oxygen

This common commodity is the most vital. A sudden drop in the supply of oxygen instantly leads to fainting of which failure to restore oxygen supply will eventually lead to death. It takes less than two minutes to die of oxygen starvation. This normally happens when the nose or the throat is blocked with materials.

Causes Of Fainting

There are several triggers that can cause fainting due to their ability to alter the heart rate. Some are medications why others may be human activities.
  • A Scary Sight: A rise in the hormone adrenaline level will increase the heart beat which will cause the above condition as explained earlier.
  • Sudden Pain: Pain can also affect the adrenaline level just like the one above. Pain range from heat, emotional pains, accident etc.
  • Laughing: Funny and true.
  • Dehydration: This leads to reducing blood pressure, which causes fainting
  • Diabetics: Causes dehydration and eventually reduce blood pressure
  • Hot And Stuffy Place: A room with reducing oxygen supply can be a major cause of fainting
  • Standing for a long time: Simply put, gravity affects the blood flow to parts of the body. Long standing will encourage blood flow to the legs and less to the brain leading to the above problem
  • Sudden Change Of Posture: Waking up suddenly especially in the morning can lead to fainting
  • Extreme Exercise: Extreme activities that can reduce the sugar level of the body or increase the oxygen demands of the other organs in the body can be demanding on the brain. Signs of fainting
  1. Nausea
  2. Giddiness
  3. Excessive sweating
  4. Dim vision
  5. Palpitation or rapid heart rate

Prevention Of Fainting

  1. Lie down if signs and symptoms come up
  2. Avoid stressful situations or anxiety such as running unnecessarily
  3. Use prescription only medications as prescribed by a medical expert
  4. Treat medical conditions that can lead to fainting

Treatment Of A Patient Who Fainted

  1. Since most times, the person may be unconscious the person rendering assistance should sit the patient on his or his back
  2. Open clothes and belts to restore blood flow
  3. Clear airways
  4. Shake the patient
  5. Take the patient to an aerated room
