The advantage and disadvantage of dry granulation process is based on the other two granulation techniques; wet granulation and direct compression. Dry granulation is a powder agglomeration process used in the pharmaceutical industry to improve the flowability of powders by increasing the particle size (granules). This operation is achieved using a roller press, which can have different configurations and equipment designs.

Dry Granulation Process
When the granulated ingredients are sensitive to moisture or heat, this procedure is implemented. Granules are produced without the aid of any liquid solution as the name suggests. This technique is used for the preparation of aspirin and other aspirin combinations for tablets.

The steps involved in dry granulation are- weighing formulation ingredients, mixing of formulation ingredients, compression of mixed powders into slugs, milling, and sieving of slugs, mixing with disintegrants and lubricants, and compression of granules into tablets, etc.

Advantages Of Dry Granulation
• Both roller compaction and slugging require conventional grades of excipients
• No heat or solvent required
• Not associated with alterations in drug morphology
• It requires less equipment, less space, more economic than wet granulation
• Produce tablet with better disintegration as there is little or no binder
• It is easy to scale up production from development to tableting as it requires minimal steps

Disadvantages Of Dry Granulation
• Specialised equipment is necessary
• Issues regarding powder flow
• Tablets produced are softer than wet granulation leading to difficulty in processing techniques afterwards
• Reduced yield of tablets due to the generation of considerable dust
• Segregation of components might occur during post mixing
