Syrups are classified bases on on several factors. There is no single way to classify syrup because of the fact that they are complex medication.
Syrup is a saturated or concentrated, viscous aqueous solution of sucrose/sugar substitute with or without flavor/medicinal substances in purified water. Pharmaceutical syrup is concentrated sugar with medicinal substances.

All pharmaceutical syrups are not manufactured equally. There is a subtle difference in these products that can cause ineffective use in clinical effects. Pharmaceutical syrup generally can be broken down into different categories.

According To Their Basic Formulas
1. Sugar based simple syrup: which are concentrated solutions of sugar with purified water alone
2. Artificial syrup: which are formulated with artificial sweetening agents and viscosity builders
According To Their Function
1. Aromatic or adjuvant syrups: They are mostly used to improve the taste of salty, bitter, or otherwise unpleasant mixtures
2. Flavored Syrup: contains various aromatic and pleasantly flavored substances and is intended as a vehicle or flavor for prescriptions. This flavored syrup is preferred particularly for children because of the absence of alcohol or very little alcohol they contain and this makes them superior solvents for water-soluble substances. They possess remarkable properties for bitter and saline drugs.

According To Source Of Medicinal Agent
1. Made from extractive drugs: Here, the fluid extract of the respective medicines is mixed with the syrup
2. Made from chemicals: This can be either by simple solution or by chemical reaction and solution. Here the taste of the medicinal agents is greatly modified
