The Job And Duty Of Superintendent Pharmacist And Pharmacy Manager

Every pharmaceutical company in Nigeria must be headed by a registered pharmacist. They are called superintendent pharmacists or in some cases pharmacy managers. They are responsible for the smooth operation of the company.

For many community pharmacies, the superintendent or pharmacy manager doubles as the owner and chief executive officer. All other staff including pharmacists answer to them. This hierarchy allows for the smooth operation of the company.
Pharmacy Manager And Superintendent Pharmacist
There is a difference between superintendent pharmacist and pharmacy manager. However, the line is very thin. Superintendent pharmacist does a lot. One of their main roles is to register the premises with the pharmacists council of Nigeria or products with national agencies for food and drug administration and control. Some of the job description and duty of superintendent pharmacist include but not limited to:
1. Oversee the daily business operations of the company
2. Verify expiry date of products
3. Monitor product display and general appearance of the environment
4. Assessing customer request and complaint
5. Appoint and train new staffs
6. Schedule shift
7. Manage other staff
8. Dispensing prescription and review prescription details
9. Medication counseling of clients
10. Take inventory
11. Specify appropriate storage of prescription and control drugs

For pharmacy managers, they do all these including accounting. That is why in addition to the bachelor of pharmacy or doctor of pharmacy degree, they are required in most cases to gain an additional bachelor of public administration or equivalent.
In some cases, the owner may not be the superintendent pharmacist and so handle most of the role of pharmacy manager like accounting and employment of new staff.
