The job market is filled with some jargons that can confuse new pharmacist especially on job position. Pharmacist get employed to fill a vacanncy to cover for a position. Each of them have their own job description, time and title. This post will cover all the job position available for pharmacist, their duties and responsibilities including work duration.

Job Position

Intern Or Pupil Pharmacist

This is the first stage in the life of a pharmacist in the job market. Intern Pharmacist are full time employee of their respective company. They work under the supervision a superintendent pharmacist known as preceptor for a period of one year. They work same hours full time pharmacist work and also enjoy benefits entitled to full time pharmacist. Their salary is obviously lower than that of the full time Pharmacist.

Superintendent Pharmacist

A superintendent pharmacist is a pharmacist who registered and is managing the place. Some did not actually register it but they act as both manager and chief pharmacist. He oversees the administration of the company. He monitors the activities of the rest staffs including other pharmacist. No company have more than one superintendent pharmacist. They may work more hours than other staffs.
The position can be handled by any registered pharmacist. Salary is usually the highest in the company

Full-time Pharmacist

The definition of full-time means different things to different companies. There is no clearcut definition in Nigeria yet but there is a guide. Each organization have the hours of the days and week considered full time hours. Full-time pharmacist work that hours with benefits attach like one year leave. The salary per hour is usually higher than other pharmacist in the ranking. They run shift and have off day during the week. They also expect increase in salary after some years. There can be more than one in each company. All full-time pharmacist are registered with the Pharmacist Council Of Nigeria (P.C.N).

Part-time Pharmacist

Part-time pharmacist are usually employed to fill up the space or hours left by superintendent or full-time Pharmacist. They work fewer hours a day or during the week. They have more flexible timetable or schedule. They may not enjoy the benefits of full time staffs like leave or off days. Their salary may not be subject to increment after some years. The salary per hour is not usually high compared to superintendent or full-time pharmacist. In lecturing job, they are called adjunct. They also have their registration with PCN.

Locum Pharmacist

A locum pharmacist is a temporary staff of any organization. It can can have a specific time and period well stated. A locum pharmacist can be employed by a full-time pharmacist to help cover for the period he or she may likely not be available. The salary will be paid by that full-time pharmacist to the locum pharmacist for the days. In other cases, the superintendent pharmacist can employ a locum to help fill up the gap left by another pharmacist who may have gone to school or find a better job until a suitable replacement is sorted out.
Anyone can be a locum pharmacist. From pharmacy students to intern students to register pharmacist. The salary is never fix but depends on the level of experience by the locum pharmacist. Most full time pharmacist work as locum in other companies during their off duty period or after closing from the primary place of duty. May or may not be regiaregisalreay with PCN and their work may not need their regiaregistr but will increase their salary.

However, many companies avoid taking locum because they may leave anytime pushing the company to source for another locum to fill the space which can make them rush into picking just any hand. Besides, it takes locum some time to get to know the stock and adjust to the new environment.

Pre-intern, Post-intern, Pre-NYSC, and Post-NYSC

Pre-intern are students who just graduated from pharmacy school and not yet inducted. Post interns are those who already got their one year mandatory internship done but yet to get their annual licence. They are also called pre-NYSC (National Youth Service Corporation). Post NYSC are full time pharmacist. The term is use by employers to stress the level of experience they want. Some want 2 years or there about post-NYSC experience.
