UNIJOS Pharmacy Programme

The fact is Pharmacy in UNIJOS started in October 1983 in the defunct federal university of technology, Makurdi and was then referred to as faculty of pharmacy and technology. In January 1984, the federal university of technology, Makurdi was merged with the university of Jos and the faculty remained in the University of Jos at the Makurdi campus. In January 1988, federal government reserve the Makurdi campus from the university of Jos and converted it to a university of agriculture.
The government further directed that the faculty of pharmacy and health technology be transferred to Jos. The faculty moved to Jos in December 1988 and was renamed faculty of pharmaceutical sciences. The faculty was initially accommodated in some temporary structures in the Bauchi campus of the University. The faculty finally moved into her present ultra modern location in June. The first sets of 31 students graduated in may 1990 under the deanship of professor E. N. Sokombe.

Mode Of Admission

1. Joint Admission And Matriculation Examination (JAMB) Unified  Tertiary Matriculation Examination (U.T.M.E):
The O'Level requirements include five credits passes in English language, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. However, there was no information on the number of sitting acceptable. Readers should know that majority of pharmacy schools accept only one sitting. The rest is maximum of two sittings. Candidates UTME subjects are Use of English language, physics, chemistry and biology. UNIJOS accepts candidate whose UTME score is above 180. A point to note is that Unijos does not accept candidates that took them as second choice of institution.
Candidates who meets the above requirements have to buy online UNIJOS post UTME form which is sold for N2000. After filling the online documents and uploading the relevant documents such as O'Level result, local government of origin certificate, passport, birth certificate, etc. the application form is printed out which is the main requirement on the day of the post UTME screening.
The Unijos post UTME is made up of 25 multiple choice questions (M.C.Q) which is under 30 minutes. It is based on JAMB computer based test (C.B.T). The questions are from the four subjects written in JAMB. About 2127 candidates applied for pharmacy of which 2118 took them as first choice, 8 as second and 1 as third choice university.
2. Pre degree:
The eligibility of pre degree candidates is similar to that of post UTME. The same O'Level subjects. I saw somewhere where they said the number of credit must be up to six for candidates who wish to enter Pharmacy through pre degree. It may be true but am not sure. The five subjects are English language, mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics.
Interested applicants are expected to buy the JAMB UTME form, write and score more than 180 in the examination. Then they can then proceed to get the online pre degree form at the rate of N10000. The form cannot be completed without the JAMB registration number. Don't really know if there is an entrance examination but it is advisable that applicants should come from the following states as UNIJOS practice catchment area zoning. They are;
1. Plateau state
2. Nasarawa state
3. Niger state
4. Kwara state
5. Benue state
6. Logo state
Successful candidates are expected to report to the department of Remedial science for registration upon payment of an acceptance fee of N25000. UNIJOS does not provide accommodation for its pre degree students. The pre degree programme is designed for both nationals and foreigners. The school fees for nationals is N52400 while for foreigners, it is N91500. Late payment attracts a N10000 fee and replacement of lost identity card cost N2000.
Pre degree lecture pattern is similar with other schools. Lecture consist of classes for the five science subjects. Two semester separated by two examinations. I don't also know if UNIJOS combine the examination score from both semester.
3. Direct Entry:
The university of Jos accept three A Level passes in chemistry, biology/zoology and physics or Mathematics. This is in combination with JAMB UTME requirements which is five O'Level credit in English language, biology, mathematics, physics and chemistry. The number of sitting was not specified.
There are several A Level programme and UNIJOS accepts Cambridge, Interim Joint Matriculation Examination (I.J.M.B), etc. but do not accept result from Joint University preliminary Examination Board (J.U.P.E.B) certificate. They even have the programme for IJMB.
IJMB in UNIJOS is new and just like in other schools require candidates to have five credit in five science subjects which is English language, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. The application form is sold online for the sum of N7500. The form is filled and submitted to the office of the deputy registrar, non-National Universities Commission (N.U.C) funded programmes. I don't think there is an entrance examination.
The school fees is not yet out as at the time of writing this. But one can predict the cost considering what it cost in other universities.
The programme run for a period of 11 months with two semesters. Each semester comes to a close with an examination. First semester examination provide 30% of the total grade point for each subject while second semester examination provide the remaining 70%. The questions are usually theory and practical. Also, the examination cuts across a week and each day can take two examinations and most examination span a period of 2 hours to 3 hours depending on either theory or practical.
All candidates who wants to gain admission through Direct Entry (D.E) must buy both JAMB DE form and UNIJOS DE form. UNIJOS DE form is sold online for N2000. Also only candidates who took them as first choice of study will be considered. No physical screening. The screening is done based on documents uploaded online.

Also foreign students will pay N5000 per repeated course, N10000 if candidate defer admission for a year and N2000 in case of replacement for lost identity card. UNIJOS School Hostel Accommodation

The allocation of hostel is based on first come first serve. No allocated hostel to students who have not paid their fees and register their courses. Although the system claimed more preference for year one and final year students, experience have shown otherwise. So it is a bit of luck. The school hostel fee is N13200. Printout the clearance hostel accommodation and attach N50 naira postal card and the receipt taken to faculty finance for verification and issuance of official receipt. The student returns to the student affairs division with the verified receipt and two official receipt for bed space. There are about four bed space per room.
