Hospital delivery in Nigeria is becoming very popular even in the villages. The reason can be due to the success that have been recorded over the years over other forms of delivery like traditional birth delivery method.

To have a successful stress free delivery usually starts from the day of discovery of pregnancy. It further depends on if the woman attends antenatal classes or not. However, not all who registered for classes follow the schedule of coming some days before delivery.

There are two ways to look at it. Some pregnant women stay at the hospital for some time before the delivery of the baby while others may wait until the time of labor. Whatever the case may be, knowing the process can be lifesaving.

Pregnant Women In The Hospital

Majority of pregnant women who attends antenatal classes will be aware when they may likely go into labor. Such ones can decides to go to the hospital early to prevent rush.

It normally starts with packing the right things to use at the hospital considering the number of days expected to stay. Take along all necessary medical cards most especially antenatal cards. The woman or her guider signs all necessary documents. Held straight to the nurse or mid wife in charge who have been organizing antenatal classes. He/she will determine if it is right to come to the hospital or not after asking questions like

  • How old is the pregnancy
  • Have contractions started
  • If yes how frequent
If it is okay by her, she will directed to the maternity room/ward for some rest. This can last for days. The nurse will get all necessary cards to know how the pregnancy developed. On day-to-day basics, all vital signs will be checked including periodic checks on the position of the baby.

Periodic check on the size of the cervix will provide adequate signals when delivery is near. In such a case, the woman is sent right away to the delivery room. At this stage, they will ask the woman all what she needs like if she wants her husband to be with her or needs a video coverage. In addition, if she needs a particular doctor to handle her, he will be called right away. It is advisable to bare all religious or cultural beliefs out to the nurse.

During delivery, a nurse helps the mother and child. After delivery, the baby is placed on the mother. If another is coming, the first one is worn a bangle or anything to indicate the first baby. Mother and child will remain here for about two hours before the baby will be cleaned with olive oil.

Emergency Delivery

For mothers who wants to wait until the sign of delivery strikes, it is better to for expecting mothers to arrange their hospital bag beforehand. Immediately the signs of delivery comes, determine the best nearest hospital to go to, the best route to take.

The time of arrival can determine a whole lot of things. At daytime, the woman can held straight to labor unit without card or whatever. They immediately check the age of the pregnancy to determine when labor may probably starts. The guider does all of that later. However, if it falls at night the woman goes to the accident and emergency units since every other route is lock for the night. Here they determine how old the pregnancy is. Below 20 weeks of pregnancy will be handled here why above that will be sent to the labor unit.

At this stage, the rest of the process is the same with that of the first procedure.

Preparing For A Cesarean Section (C.S)

CS is not what any woman will want for herself and the new-born baby. However, not even those in advance countries has been able to prevent it all together. However, during the periods of checks, it may be discovered that delivery will be difficult. It therefore means that such pregnancy may require the services of a surgeon who will help the mother and child.

Once the CS is confirmed, the mother will be taken to a room where a suitable hospital gown is worn on her. All physical vital signs are accessed. An enema may be given. All forms are filled and signed as appropriate for the surgery to go on.

After the operation, mother and child are moved into a recovery room where medications are given to manage post-operative pains. This may prolong hospital stay to some extra days compared to normal delivery.

After Birth Delivery

Both mother and child are tested and treated for prevention and treatment. This is usually done at the maternity ward. Here, series of lectures are held on how to perform basic task such as how to bath the child properly etc.

To Have A Successful Delivery

First those who attend antennal, they would have been informed of the basic things they need to come with to the hospital. The list varies from hospital to hospital as some hospital provides most of the things. Some others require the mother to come along with them. So be ahead by asking the hospital you wants to deliver to know what and what they may need.

Create A Birth Plan

List your essentials and when to pack your pregnancy bag. It is proper to do these seven months into the pregnancy. Place it where it is easily accessible. Items in the bag should fall into one of the following categories.

  1. Items needed during and after delivery
  2. Items needed for baby and mother

Mother Items Before And After Delivery


  1. Packs of sanitary pads
  2. Maternity underpants
  3. Nursing bras
  4. Personal belongings that are used at home e.g.

  • Water and food
  • Cell phone with charger and credit
  • Make up kits
  • Entertainment gadgets
  • Toiletries and towels
  • Wrappers, gowns, slippers, etc.
  • Clothing

Depending on the hospital, other items needed may be those that advance hospitals are supposed to provide. There are several examples.

Baby Items After Delivery


  1. Diapers and nappies (wipes)
  2. Blanket and cot
  3. Cloths for few days including caps sucks etc. (preferable unisex)
  4. Baby makeup kit
  5. Antiseptic, disinfectant, olive oil and shear butter
  6. Baby towels
  7. Feeding bottles and baby foods
  8. Untreated mosquito nets with mattress and zip
  9. Hot water flask
  10. Spirit and cotton wool

There are a couple of other items that may be required in general from mothers. However, they are not common in Nigeria like health care insurance plan etc.
