Gain weight
Go to major health blogs in Nigeria, visit herbal traditional healers and health seminars and you will notice that one of the topics freely discuss is the issue of obesity. This is a very rampant situation. Health experts always talk about the problem it generates and solution to the problem. However, there is a silent trouble hardly discussed in Nigeria. That is the opposite of obesity, which does not even have a name, slimness. This is because it is not believed to be a health problem.

Information on how to lose weight is constantly in the air. Today, we will learn how to gain weight. Funny enough, I wanted to learn about this also. The few approaches I have adopted have shown to work, as it has been evident from my admirers. Some attribute it to the fact that the stress of pharmacy school is gone and rest of mind. While these can be an added reason, behold, certain other factors also come to play.

Before we talk about how to gain weight proper, let us say something. Different people want to get bigger for a different reason. However, medical experts believe that healthy individuals should have their body mass index (B.M.I) in the range of 18.5 – 25. This calculation is from a person’s weight, height, age, and gender. Therefore, if you fall within that range, this article may not exactly be for you. However, many persons who have a healthy BMI can still make attempt to add up a bit.

Factors That Cause Underweight

In order to know things that can give us more weight, it is better to know the things that make us slim. Some major ones include;

  • Genetic Factor: Most slim persons have a higher rate of metabolism. This has been a programme in the gene and nothing can stop it. That is why they eat more and pass a lot of faeces.
  • Physical activity: Most slim persons have a lightweight. Due to this, they jump more thinking they are proving to their fat counterparts they are better. However, such activities really do more harm than good. Increase physical activities only burn more of the fat in the body than the ones getting stored.
  • Thyroid hormone: Hyperthyroidism is a disease that causes the body to lose weight.
  • Diseases: Such as cancer and diabetes can affect fats in the body. However, it is rare to see slim persons with diabetics. However, that cannot be ruled out. Cancer cells also is a leading cause of loss of weight. Normally, illness affects appetite thereby reducing food intake. It also affects food metabolism by either increasing metabolism or reducing nutrients absorption.
  • Drugs: Some drugs cause nausea and weight loss.
  • Psychological Stress: Stress and depression are very important factors that contribute to slimness.

From the above, most of the factors only occur for short term. However, when the slimness is for a long-term, the following can help.

How To Add Weight

  1. Food: Eat as often as possible especially more than you burn. Eating often using the wrong food can lead to starving the body of its nutrition requirements. Eat foods rich in carbohydrates, protein, fats, and plenty of vegetables. These foods are usually high in calorie. Eat heavy food especially immediately before going to bed. This allows the body to absorb a majority of the foods' nutrient. Eat less of junk foods such as bread, pasta, and snacks.
  2. Water: Do not drink fluid before a meal and possible during a meal. This will allow more food consumption as fluid occupies portions of the stomach for food.
  3. Sleep: It is during sleep the body process information and carries out some metabolism. This period should be increased in the lifestyle of a slim person. Slim persons should have a sleep time of 7 hours in a day.
  4. Exercise: Exercise is very good. It helps to build up the appetite of a person. It allows the person to eat more after each session. However, extreme exercise for slim persons does the opposite. It increases metabolic rate thereby reducing nutrients available for growth. Just as what I have said before, the exercise should not burn more than what you consume. Recommended exercise include simple workout like press up, puss up, etc. Very common exercise, such as trekking long distance should not be encouraged.
  5. Drugs: There is a prescription drug that does this. This came last as I hate this idea myself. The drug is cyproheptadine. The side effects are mild such as fatigue, dizziness etc. With this, it is no longer a natural way of gaining weight.

Side Effects Of Underweight

The truth is that persons under 18.5 in BMI scale are not unhealthy because of their BMI. Health experts have not been able to pin any side effects to being underweight. However, it believed that too much of anything is bad. Some came out with the following:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Infections
  • Fertility problems for women
A detail description of how this happens is beyond the scope of this post.
