Can Hand Sanitiser Kill Scabies

Hand sanitizers have been rumored to kill scabies. Scabies are small microscopic animals that live under the skin. This causes intense itching and severe pain.

There are different types of hand sanitiser. Some hand sanitizers are made up of alcohol and water. Some are made with hydrogen peroxide. However, they all do the same thing; kill microscopic organisms.

Hand sanitiser can be used to kill scabies outside the human body. That means that if you pick out the scabies from under the skin and cover it with hand sanitiser, scabies will die.

However, applying hand sanitiser all over your body to kill scabies will not work. The reason is simple. The base of hand sanitiser cannot penetrate the skin in an adequate amount strong enough to kill scabies.

Keeping the infected area wet with 91% rubbing alcohol for a few minutes will encourage them to crawl to the surface in an attempt to find a more hospitable patch of skin. Tweezers can be used to remove them.

The world health organization (WHO) does not encourage the use of hand sanitiser. They encourage hand washing with soap and water. Hand sanitiser is an alternative when soap and water is not immediately available.

Since a single application will not yield a good result, repeated administration may seem like the way to go. However, this can cause dry hands and cracked skin. Some ingredients in hand sanitizer, such as triclosan, may cause health complications if you are exposed to them in large amounts.
