Dispersible and effervescent tablets are oral solid dosage forms. They both look similar design to solve almost the same problem. However, there exist some differences between them.

Dispersible Tablet

Dispersible tablets are uncoated tablets or film-coated tablets intended to be dispersed in water before administration giving a homogeneous dispersion. Oral Dispersible tablets are tablets which get dispersed or disintegrate when they get in contact with saliva with the release of active drug providing maximum drug bioavailability as compared to conventional dosage form. Some can be put in water to disintegrate and dissolve.

Effervescent Tablet

Effervescent tablets are uncoated tablets generally containing acid substances and carbonates or hydrogen carbonates that react rapidly in the presence of water to release carbon dioxide. They are intended to be dissolved or dispersed in water before administration. Usually, these tablets are prepared by compressing the active ingredients with a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and organic acids such as citric and tartaric acid.

Difference Between Dispersible Tablet And Effervescent Tablet

1. Effervescent tablets utilize foam theory to quicken the disintegration of the drug, and dispersible tablets quicken the disintegration of medicine by the swelling of a special adjuvant in solution
2. While dispersible tablets can be put in the mouth to disintegrate, effervescent tablets can only disintegrate in water
3. Dispersible tablets disintegrate within 3 minutes in water whereas effervescent tablet disintegrates within 5 minutes, unless otherwise specified in the individual monograph
However, they are both fast acting and suitable for people who cannot use solid dosage form and avoid the disadvantage of liquid dosage form.
