What Ca-C 1000 Is And What It Is Used For (Indication)?

Ca-C 1000 contains three active ingredients, two are calcium salts (calcium lactate gluconate and calcium carbonate) and the third is ascorbic acid (vitamin C).

Calcium is an essential mineral, necessary for bone formation and maintenance. Calcium also plays an important role in the way the body functions. It is essential for nerve, muscle and heart function as well as for clotting of blood. In addition, it mediates the action of many hormones. To carry out these various roles, calcium must be available to the appropriate tissues in the proper concentration.

Vitamin C plays an important role in biochemical processes. It is also needed for collagen formation (found in bone, cartilage, skin, and other tissues) and tissue repair. High doses of vitamin C are found to be effective in the prevention and treatment of upper respiratory tract infections.

Ca-C 1000 is used when you or your child has: Calcium and vitamin C deficiency, which can be the result of poor nutrition or may occur due to an increase in requirement of calcium and vitamin C as seen in:

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding,

• During periods of rapid growth (childhood, adolescence),

• In old age,

• During infectious diseases and convalescence (during recovery from an illness).

Ca-C 1000 effervescent tablets provide vitamin C and calcium in amounts sufficient to cover the daily needs at times of increased requirements. Ca-C 1000 may also be used as an adjuvant in the prevention and treatment of colds and influenza.

What You Need To Know Before You Use Ca-C 1000?

Do not use Ca-C 1000 if you or your child:

• Is allergic (hypersensitive) to calcium lactate-gluconate, calcium carbonate, vitamin C or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,

• Has high blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia),

• Has high calcium levels in urine (hypercalciuria),

• Has certain kidney problems including: kidney stones (nephrolithiasis) and calcium deposits in your kidney tissue (nephrocalcinosis).

Warnings And Precautions

Talk to your medical doctor or pharmacist before using Ca-C 1000 if you or your child:

• Has too much calcium in urine (hypercalciuria) with mild or moderate impairment of kidney function or has a history of stone formation. In these cases it is recommended to increase the fluid intake. If necessary, the calcium dosage will be reduced or therapy will be discontinued,

• Has high level of oxalic acid in urine,

• Suffers from a kidney disorder. In this case only use this product after consulting your medical doctor or pharmacist and especially if you are using aluminum containing preparations. In case of kidney failure, consult your medical doctor or pharmacist before using vitamin C.

High doses of vitamin D and derivatives should be avoided during treatment with Ca-C 1000 unless recommended by your medical doctor.

Other Medicines And Ca-C 1000

Tell your medical doctor or pharmacist if you or your child is using or has recently used or might use any other medicines:

• Thiazide diuretics (pills stimulating urine flow, used for treatment of high blood pressure, or conditions where your body accumulates too much fluid, such as heart failure).

• Systemic corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory drugs).

• Cardiac glycosides (digitalis containing medicines, used for the treatment of heart failure).

• Tetracycline containing preparations (antibiotics). They should be taken at least two hours before or four to six hours after oral intake of Ca-C 1000.

• Oral bisphosphonate (used for the treatment of bone problems) or sodium fluoride. They should be taken at least three hours before the oral intake of Ca-C 1000. Concomitant therapy with vitamin D and derivatives enhance calcium absorption.

• Aluminum-containing antacids (which help to neutralize the acid content of your stomach).

• Deferoxamine (used to remove excess iron from the body).

Do not take more than 1g of vitamin C as it may produce false results in blood and urine tests (e.g. for glucose determination).

Ca-C 1000 With Food And Drink

The amount of calcium absorbed by your gut may be reduced when eating certain foods, e.g. spinach, rhubarb and whole cereals. You should not use calcium products within two hours of eating such foods.

Pregnancy And Breastfeeding

Ca-C 1000 can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding in case of a calcium deficiency. The total daily intake of calcium during the last three months of pregnancy should not exceed 1500 mg. Contact your medical doctor immediately in case of calcium overdose during pregnancy as it may have side effects on the developing fetus.

Do not take more than the recommended dose during pregnancy, as exposure to high levels of vitamin C during prenatal life may lead to the symptoms of its deficiency in neonates and infants. Calcium and vitamin C pass into breast milk but have no negative effect on the baby.

Driving And Using Machines

Ca-C 1000 has no effect on the ability to drive and use machines.

How to use Ca-C 1000 (Dosage)?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your medical doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Adults and children 7 years of age and older: the recommended dose is one effervescent tablet daily. Children from 3 to 7 years of age: the recommended dose is 1/2 effervescent tablet daily.

Infants: as prescribed by your doctor.

Dissolve the effervescent tablet in a glass of water (approx. 200 ml) and drink immediately. Ca-C 1000 effervescent tablets may be taken with or without food.

Overdosage

If you or your child use more Ca-C 1000 than you should;

Overdose may lead to high calcium levels in your urine (hypercalciuria) and high blood calcium levels (hypercalcaemia). Symptoms of high blood calcium levels (hypercalcaemia) may include: nausea, vomiting, thirst, excess drinking of fluids, excess urination, dehydration and constipation.

Long term overdose with increased calcium level in the blood can lead to calcium deposits in the body. Large doses of vitamin C may cause diarrhea and blood related disorders, such as hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells). Contact your medical doctor immediately in case you have taken an overdose by mistake.

Treatment Of Overdose

In the case of intoxication, treatment should be stopped immediately and the fluid deficiency should be corrected.

Where overdosage requires treatment, it should be via hydration, including i.v. saline solution when needed. A loop diuretic (e.g., furosemide) may then be used to further increase calcium excretion and to prevent volume overload, but thiazide diuretics should be avoided.

In patients with renal failure, hydration is ineffective and they should undergo dialysis. In the case of persistent hypercalcemia, contributing factors should be excluded, e.g. vitamin A or D, hypervitaminosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, malignancies, renal failure, or immobilization.

If You Forget To Take Ca-C 1000

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your medical doctor or pharmacist.
