It started as a joke when it was spreading that eating cooked beans and fried plantains is dangerous and poisonous to health. At first, I did not take it seriously. Later, I started to ponder as the news generated more controversy. Reading through the reason they claim the combination is dangerous made it important.

Eating Beans And Fried Plantain Is Poisonous

Before I go ahead to explain, let's clarify the very important point. Eating beans alone is considered safe by the pioneers of these claims so also is eating fried plantains. The problem is the combination. So how true is this claim and theory? First of all, let us look at what they said.

It was first posted by Kemi Lopsam, a natural health doctor and an acupuncturist based in Akure, in 2019 on a website called Newsroom. According to her, unripe plantain and beans are safe. The problem is the ripe plantain cooked or fried. The reason is that beans and ripe plantain are acid forming foods. They can cause heart problems, ulcers, and gastrointestinal reflux.

Is Beans And Fried Plantain Bad

There are different types of beans with different amounts of acid content. Generally, all beans are acidic. And they released these in the stomach. Ripe plantain is also acid forming and is made worse by frying. So the combination increases stomach acid level.

Eating beans and fried plantains is a delicacy. The combination cannot cause ulcers and heart problems more than other foods.

The only thing is that people that have ulcers may experience ulcer pain and gastrointestinal reflux after taking beans and or fry plantain which can be treated with antacid and acid inhibitors like omeprazole. Soaking beans overnight before cooking or eating small quantities reduces the level of acid.

As for heart problems, it is generally bad to eat food containing too much fried oil, especially bad oil. Frying plantain increases its fat content which is generally bad. That does not make it poisonous. Eat in moderation.
