The major active ingredient of top tea is caffeine which is an alkaloid. A cup of top tea contains less than 50 mg. A study had shown an increase in gastric HCL in taking similar tea and the increase was sequentially tallied with increase in the duration of intake of the tea.

The implications are that tea drinking can induce gastric ulcers. Increased HCL will induce depletion of parietal cells on continuous stimulation and usage. Reduced parietal cells will lead to achlorhydria which is lack of acid secretion with the resultant effect of impaired protein metabolism.

Adding sugar and milk is the combination enjoyed by some. Sugar and milk can make ulcer pain worse. Combining sugar and milk with a caffeine drink like top tea can lead to serious ulcer pain.

Top tea should be reduced as it can trigger ulcer pain. Avoid adding milk and sugar to it.
