Super Apeti Plus Tablet Use, Dose, Side Effect, Composition

Super Apeti plus tablet is an antihistamine (antiallergic) and antiserotonergic agent with B-complex vitamins. It is used for itchy eyes and body, running nose and other allergic conditions. In Nigeria and some other African countries, it is used as an appetite stimulant.

Composition Of Super Apeti Plus Tablet

Each film coated tablet contains:

Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride BP equivalent to Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride Anhydrous 4mg, Thiamine Hydrochloride BP 1.5 mg, Riboflavin BP 1.5 mg, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride BP 1.0 mg, Calcium Pantothenate BP 2.5 mg.

Excipients include Calcium Hydrogen Phosphate BP, Maize Starch BP, Gelatin BP, Sodium Benzoate BP, Purified Talc BP, Magnesium Stearate BP, Ethyl Cellulose BP, Macrogols BP 6000 and Hypromellose BP. The Color is titanium dioxide.

Pharmacology

Super Apeti Plus tablets contain a medicine called cyproheptadine. This belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. In some illnesses too much 'histamine' and 'serotonin' are produced in the body. Super Apeti tablets help in these illnesses by stopping the unwanted effects of histamine and serotonin. Cyproheptadine increases appetite and causes weight gain.

Vitamin b1 (Thiamine) is useful in the utilization of carbohydrates from food.

Vitamin b2 (Riboflavin) is useful in the generation of energy from foods. Riboflavin is also necessary for the functioning of pyridoxine and nicotinic acid.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) and Calcium Pantothenate (vitamin b5) are useful in the utilization of amino acids, carbohydrates and fats.

Pharmacokinetics

Cyproheptadine is well absorbed from the digestive tract. It is mainly eliminated through urine and up to 2% - 20% through stool.

Thiamine, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine and Calcium Pantothenate are absorbed from the digestive tract and are widely distributed to most body tissues. Their amount exceeds the body's requirements and is not stored but excreted in the urine.

Therapeutic Indications Of Super Apeti Plus Tablet

Super Apeti Plus tablets are useful in the following conditions:

  • Perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis (symptoms are sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, running nose)
  • Vasomotor rhinitis (intermittent - coming and going)
  • Allergic conjunctivitis (eye become sore, inflamed and sometimes painful) due to inhalant allergens and foods
  • Mild, uncomplicated urticaria (pale red bumps) and angioedema (swelling of the area beneath the skin or mucosa)
  • Allergic reactions to blood or plasma
  • Cold urticaria (a skin reaction to cold)
  • Dermatographism (a localized hive-like reaction on scratching the skin)
  • As therapy for anaphylactic reactions (serious allergic reaction) adjuvanted to epinephrine and other standard measures after the short-term symptoms have been controlled
  • Loss of appetite

Contraindications

Do not take Super Apeti Plus tablets if allergic to cyproheptadine, glaucoma (higher than normal pressure inside the eye), symptoms of prostate enlargement, ulcer in the digestive tract with narrowing of the digestive tract, debilitated (severely weak) patient, inability to completely or partially empty the bladder.

Dosage And Administration Of Super Apeti Plus Tablet

Dosage should be individualized according to the needs and the response of the patients. The quantity of cyproheptadine in 'mg' is considered in the following recommendations:

As an appetite stimulant: adults and children (7 to 14 years): one tablet thrice daily. The maximum daily dose is 16 mg (4 tablets). The total daily dose for adults should not exceed 0.5 mg/kg day.

Children (2-6 years): 1/2 tablets thrice daily. A maximum daily dose is 8 mg of cyproheptadine (2 tablets).

In pruritis (itching) and allergy: children (2 to 6 years): the total daily dosage for pediatric patients may be calculated based on of body weight or body area using approximately 0.25 mg/kg/day or 8 mg (2 tablets) per square meter of body surface (8 mg/m²). The usual dose is 2 mg (½ tablet) two or three times a day, adjusted as necessary to the size and response of the patients. The dose is not to exceed 12 mg (3 tablets) a day.

Children (7 to 14 years): 4 mg (1 tablet) thrice daily. A maximum daily dose is 16 mg (4 tablets).

Adults: 4 mg (1 tablet) thrice daily, adjust as required. A maximum daily dose is 32 mg (8 tablets).

Adverse Reaction

The following common side effects may be caused: drowsiness and sleepiness (often transient), faintness, blurred vision, dryness of mouth and excitation.

It may cause tremor, fits, hallucination, palpitations, difficulties in passing urine, headache, fatigue, chill, increased appetite/weight gain, reduction in the effects of levodopa, a yellow coloring of urine. It may cause additional side effects that are not listed here.

Warning And Precautions For Use In Special Population

General: it should be used with caution in patients with a history of asthma, overactive thyroid, increased pressure inside the eye, heart diseases and increased blood pressure.

Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness in children below the age of two years has not been established.

Pregnancy And Lactation: Consult the Healthcare Professional in cases of pregnancy or breast-feeding. Safety in pregnancy and lactation has not been established.

Effects on ability to drive and operate machinery: caution is exercised it may cause impaired mental alertness.

Drug Interactions

Antihistamines may have additive effects with alcohol monoamine oxidase inhibitors and other central nervous system depressants for example sleeping pills and medicines for anxiety.

Symptoms Of Overdosage And Its Treatment

Cyproheptadine overdose symptoms may include extreme drowsiness, hallucinations, very dry mouth, dilated pupils, pale or reddish skin, tingling feeling, vomiting, restlessness (in a child), weak or shallow breathing or a seizure (convulsions).
