Super Apeti is an antihistamine (antiallergic) and antiserotonergic agent. It is used for itchy eyes and body, running nose and other allergic conditions. In Nigeria and some other African countries, it is used as an appetite stimulant.

Composition Of Super Apeti Tablet

Each uncoated tablet contains:

Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride equivalent to Anhydrous Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride BP 4mg. Excipients include Calcium Hydrogen Phosphate BP, Lactose BP, Maize Starch BP, Purified Talc BP, Magnesium Stearate BP, Gelatin BP and Sodium Benzoate BP.

Pharmacology

Super Apeti tablets contain a medicine called cyproheptadine. This belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. In some illnesses too much 'histamine' and 'serotonin' are produced in the body. Super Apeti tablets help in these illnesses by stopping the unwanted effects of histamine and serotonin.

Pharmacokinetics

Cyproheptadine is well absorbed from the digestive tract. It gets changed in other forms in the liver. Its plasma half-life is 8 hours. It is expelled out of the body through kidney and some unchanged medicine and its altered forms are excreted in feces.

Use And Indications Of Super Apeti Tablet

Super Apeti tablets are useful in the following short term and long-term allergic reactions and itching disorders: Allergy related dermatoses such as urticaria, pruritus (itching), dermatitis, etc. Others are allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and allergic drug reaction. It is mostly used in Nigeria to treat loss of appetite.

Dosage And Administration Of Super Apeti Tablet

Following doses need to be adjusted by the Healthcare Professional as per the response to therapy. It is an oral drug.

Allergy and Pruritus: Adults take 1 tablet three times a day. Maximum recommended dose is 32 mg in a day.

Children (7 to 14 years): take a tablet three times a day. Maximum daily dose is 16 mg.

Children (2 to 6 years): 1 tablet three times a day (0.25mg/kg/day). Maximum daily dose is 8 mg.

Loss of appetite: Adults and children (7 to 14 years): The usual dose is 1 tablet three times a day. Maximum daily dose is 16 mg.

Children (2 to 6 years): ½ tablet times a day. Maximum daily dose is 8mg.

Cyproheptadine may be administered with or without meals.

Contraindications

Do not take Super Apeti tablets if: Severe asthmatic attack, new born or premature babies, allergic to cyproheptadine and other medicine of similar chemical structure, taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor (medicine used for depression), angle-closure glaucoma, symptoms of prostate enlargement, peptic ulcer with narrowing of the digestive tract, pyloroduodenal obstruction in the digestive tract, urinary bladder neck obstruction and elderly debilitated patients.

Adverse Reaction

Common side effects may include drowsiness (often transient), faintness, blurred vision, dryness of mouth, and excitation. Consult the Healthcare Professional if the following tremor or seizure occurs. Others are hallucination, ringing in ears, palpitation, difficulties in passing urine, headache, fatigue, and chills. It may cause additional side effects that are not listed here.

Warning And Precautions

Super Apeti tablets should not be used to treat lower respiratory tract diseases, increased pressure inside the eye, heart diseases, blood pressure and overactive thyroid

Usage in Pregnancy And Lactation

Consult the Healthcare Professional in cases of pregnancy or breast-feeding.

Pediatric Use

Safety and effectiveness in children below the age of two years has not been established. Overdosage of histamine blockers, particularly in infants and children may produce hallucination (a perception in the absence of external stimulus), central nervous system depression, fits and death. Histamine blockers may diminish mental alertness and may occasionally produce excitation.

Use In Elderly

Cyproheptadine should be used with caution in elderly cases.

Effects On Ability To Drive And Operate Machinery

Tasks requiring mental alertness may be impaired and patients whose work or occupations involve driving vehicles or handling machinery should be cautioned.

Drug Interactions

Antihistamines may have additive effects with alcohol monoamine oxidase inhibitors and other central nervous system depressants for example sleeping pills and medicines for anxiety.

Symptoms Of Overdosage And Its Treatment

Signs and symptoms of cyproheptadine overdose may vary from dry mouth, fixed dilated pupils flushing, hallucinations and central nervous system depression to convulsions and death, especially in infants and children. Consult the health care provider for further treatment.
