In the NYSC Camp, the Corp members are divided into groups based on the last digit of their state code number. Each of these groups is called a platoon and the Corp member who heads a platoon is called a platoon leader. The NYSC official in-charge of a platoon is called a platoon Officer.

How To Become A Platoon Leader

If you want to be a platoon leader, then you must head to camp early. The best time to go is a day before the official day the camp will commence. There are two methods of selecting a platoon leader by the platoon officer. It is by selection or election.

Immediately after clearance, get to know your platoon officer. Some may just pick a platoon leader from the first corp members that come.

On very few occasions, the platoon officer organised elections. In that case, you will have to compete with other corp members. That means that from the very beginning, be close to other group members in your platoon.

Benefits Of Platoon Leader

There are several benefits of becoming a platoon leader. But before I go ahead to explain those benefits, know that leadership comes with great responsibility and stress.

Money And Gift

I will not mention the illegal means of making money as a plantain leader. However, there are many legitimate ways to make a few changes. Gifts by fellow corps members is one of the major ways they get paid for their sacrifice.

Connection

With a platoon leader, you have a network of connections within the camp. You are always in constant touch with your platoon officer who can send you on errands to other platoon inspectors or NYSC camp officials. This widens your connection within the camp and improves your chances of getting a better place of primary assignment (PPA). Not all platoon leaders get to enjoy a good PPA if they enter the bad books of NYSC officials. This is because getting close to many of them may expose you to the possibility of getting one or more angry.

Power

With leadership comes connections which attract power. If you can influence your PPA technically, you can influence other decisions around other corp members or yourself. This helps you carry some level.of power other corp members don't have.
