Pharmaceutical or drug companies are companies licence and registered by regulatory bodies to research, produce, develop, market, distribute and control sales of pharmaceutical materials. These materials can range from drugs, medical equipment, vaccines, etc. Some companies are big and known worldwide making millions of dollars as revenue while some others are on a small scale maybe covering a country or few countries.

Most of the big pharmaceutical companies have one thing in common. They were fortunate to discover a new drug and were able to market it as a brand name. Most of them have more than one in their shelves. The many companies that are into generics, only a handful of few made it to the top. The first that got there is Teva from Israel.
If we mention big pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria, GSK should hold that title. This is because most of the commonly prescribe drugs that treat most of the condition in Nigeria are made by GSK. It will be a thing of surprise for Nigerians to learn that some other companies top GSK. The recent 2019 rating did not even put GSK in the top 10 even when they where in it some few years back.

Johnson and Johnson company is a multinational company based in the United States of America (USA). It was founded by Robert Wood Johnson, James Wood Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson in 1886. They have three line of products. They are medical devices, consumer packages and pharmaceuticals.
The company is not very common among those not in the health sector because most of their products are not commonly use. Their major pharmaceutical product is their branded paracetamol known as Tylenol.

F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG company is one of the pharmaceutical company that have shown growth year-in-year-out. Founded in 1896 by Fritz Hoofmann-La Roche they are into two lines of products which are diagnostic and pharmaceuticals. The company don't have a lot of products in the markets but the few branded are selling well. They focus more on anticancer and antiretroviral drugs which are very expensive and they are also the maker of valium. Others are accucheck, fansidar and the almighty rocephine.

They were founded by Charles Pfizer and Charles F. Erhent in 1849. They have a lot of branded products such as lipitor, Lyrica, zithromax, celebrex, Viagra, diflucan, norvasc, and flagyl. They are well known in Nigeria.

Founded in 1996 from a merger between two giant companies, sandoz and Cibar Geigy, it is one of the most popular company in Nigeria even among the locals. They have a wide range of pharmaceutical products of which some are branded. They include the popular coartem, tegretol, voltaren, lamisil, sirdalud, co-diovan, diovan, exforge, galvus, galvus-met, etc. The name sandoz is still retain in their consolidated generic drugs.

The few antibiotics they have are not first line therapy and are not for common infection.

Named Ibrutinib, an anticancer drug that sold an estimated one billion dollars in 2016 and is expected to rise to 5 billion dollars in 2020.

Their main products are neulasta/neupogen use in the prevention of infection in patient undergoing chemotherapy and anbrel, a tumor necrosis factor blocker use in treatment of rhematoid arthritis.

Is a French multinational company. It is a product of a merger by sanofi and synthelabo in 2004 which was themselves form by several mergers. This company use to be among the top 10 but I guess strong competition is pushing it by the side. Some of its main products are clexane, aprovel, tavanic, amoklavin, amaryl, clomide among others. It has the world first-largest by prescription sales in 2013.

Glaxosmithkline

A merger between two giant pharmaceutical companies glaxo wellcome and smithkline beecham saw the birth of GSK in 2000. The merger saw the company shoot up among the top in the world taking 6th position in 2015. They have a couple of brands to their name among which are amoxil, avodart, Ventolin, ampiclox, augmentin, etc. They are also into generics, consumables and vaccines which include Panadol, sensodyne toothpaste, ribena, etc.

Bayer AG

This is a German company. Formed in 1863 by Friedrich Bayer, the company soon rose to limelight with the discovery of aspirin. It challenge the top spot for a long time until recently. The company also boast of some consumer products and generic. The man behind the discovery of aspirin does this year.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industry LTD

This is one of the biggest pharmaceutical company in the world coming from Israel. This is the only company among this list that does not have a single brand to it's name but it's products are gaining acceptance worldwide. It was founded in 1935 by Dr Gunther Friedlander and his aunt Else Kober to supply drugs across borders using camels and other sources of transportation. It's products range from drugs use in hypertension, anticholesterol, etc. They now have a few patent to their name of combination drugs. This is a company I respect alot.
