Clinical Pharmacology

Meta B Fort (Vitamin B1+B6+B12) is a complex vitamin drug containing water-soluble vitamins of the group B.

These vitamins have a broad spectrum of biological activity and each vitamin provides a pharmacological action on the body in a different way. Their presence in the body in a well-balanced amount is needed for the normal functioning of metabolism in the peripheral and central nervous system. Vitamins of group B regulate protein, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, and also improve the work of all systems in the body: central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and cardiovascular system.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): is a water-soluble vitamin, although some of its derivatives have greater lipophilicity. It is an essential coenzyme for carbohydrate metabolism in the form of diphosphate (thiamine pyrophosphate, carboxylase). Thiamine deficiency develops when the dietary intake is inadequate, severe deficiency leads to the development of a syndrome known as beriberi, Chronic 'dry' beriberi is characterized by peripheral neuropathy, muscle wasting and muscle weakness, and paralysis.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) is a water-soluble vitamin, is involved principally in amino acid metabolism, but is also involved in carbohydrate and fat metabolism. It is also required for the formation of hemoglobin.

Pyridoxine deficiency may lead to sideroblastic anemia, dermatitis, cheilosis, and neurological symptoms such as peripheral neuritis, and convulsions.

Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin): Vitamin B12, a water-soluble vitamin, occurs in the body mainly as methyl cobalamin (mecobalamin) and as adenosyl cobalamin (cobamamide) and hydroxocobalamin.

Mecobalamin and cobamamide act as coenzymes in nucleic acid synthesis. A combination of vitamins (B1+B6+B12) gives an excellent regenerative effect for the cells of the nervous system.

Indication Of Meta B Forte

Meta B Fort is indicated in the treatment and management of:

- Neurotic pain during acute and chronic neuritis and polyneuritis

- Neuralgias

- Toxic effect on the nerve tissue during alcoholism

- And also, as an adjunct in the management of other forms of neuropathy.

Contra-indication Of Meta B Forte

Meta B Fort is contra-indicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Interaction

The interaction of Meta B-fort with other drugs will be due to its components. Meta B-fort when given concomitantly with Levodopa may reduce the effect of Levodopa because of its components - Pyridoxine.

Pyridoxine has also been reported to decrease serum concentration of Phenobarbital and Phenytoin.

Absorption of Vitamin B12 (Meta B-fort) from gastrointestinal tract may be reduced by neomycin, amino salicylic acid, histamine H2-antagonists.

Precautions

Caution in patients with history of gout or hepatic disease.

Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

Not recommended for children because clinical data about the safe use of the vitamin complex of the group B in high doses in children is absent.

Overdose

Overdosing on vitamin B1 is rare but can cause severe symptoms. Mild symptoms of an overdose include weakness and a headache. In some cases, high vitamin B1 levels can cause a rapid, irregular heartbeat and low blood pressure. These symptoms can lead to cardiac problems. Some patients will develop low blood pressure and convulsions.

Toxic levels of vitamin B6 have been known to cause a variety of muscular or nerve problems. You may experience burning pains, clumsiness, a loss of muscle coordination and even paralysis, the American Pregnancy Association reports. Vitamin B-6 toxicity can also cause rapid breathing and dyspnea.

Excess intake of vitamin B12 may cause some symptoms in patients. You may develop blood clots, itching, diarrhea and serious allergic reactions. To avoid these symptoms, take vitamin B12 as recommended by your medical doctor.
