Many pregnant women with malaria fear the use of malaria drugs believing it can terminate pregnancy. Their fears are well founded. This is because the world health organization (WHO) sounds warning all the time about the danger of malaria drugs.

There are so many malaria drugs. Officially, only artesunate have been approved for use in all trimesters of pregnancy. Few others can be used for second and third trimesters.

There is no official claim of any malaria drug at therapeutic dose that terminates pregnancy in humans. SiMw have been reported to cause miscarriage in animal studies. These results cannot be extrapolated to humans.
