Yoyo Bitters Reduce Blood Sugar

Yoyo bitters is an oral poly herbal liquid preparation popularly marketed and used in Nigeria. It is made from plants such as aloe vera, cinnamomum aromaticum, citrus aurantifolia, acinos arvensis, and chenopodium murale. It is said to be effective in the prevention of kidney and bladder infections.

It is also claimed to help to normalize intestinal movement, regulate blood pressure, facilitate digestion, and prevent disorders like ulcers, gastritis, insomnia, stress, depression, and control of body weight. other usages as claimed by the producers include enhancement of effective function of the secretary glands, stimulation of the liver for effective functioning, helps in the elimination of cholesterol, sugar triglycerides, creatinine and uric acid.

Yoyo bitters have been proven to reduce blood glucose of rats. The effect was dose dependent. And the decrease became more and more significant as the research progressed. This effect is similar to what is obtained from glibenclamide, an antidiabetic drug. However, there was no hypoglycemic effect at normal dose unlike glibenclamide. Also, yoyo bitters mechanism of action is not known.
