Type Of Ambulance Services

Ambulance saves lives when deployed on time. That also depends on when they are contacted. They can rapidly transport paramedics and other first responders to the scene, carry equipment for administering emergency care and transport patients to hospital or other definitive care. They can also be used to carry the dead safely from one point to another especially in cases of pandemic like Covid-19.

Ambulance services fall into two categories. Emergency and non emergency.

Non Emergency Ambulance Service

These services include carrying the dead from one point to another. This is very important in cases of pandemic where hygiene is required. They are also used to convey the dead to the point of burial or to the mortuary if the death occurred outside the morgue.

Another form is the patient transport ambulance – A vehicle, which has the job of transporting patients to, from or between places of medical treatment, such as hospital or dialysis center, for non-urgent care. They also take patients on vacation and visitation. These patients can be suffering from chronic illness.

Emergency Ambulance Service

Emergency ambulance service brings the patient to the hospital. In some cases, they do some treatment in the ambulance as it carries the patient to the hospital. The type of ambulance will determine the level of intervention. The type of ambulance determines the mounted equipment and crew members.

A simple ambulance service provides just basic life support. With simple equipment like a patient bed, pulse oximetry and oxygen delivery devices, they can handle minor fractures and sub-acute care facilities. Others are monitoring vital signs, patient assessment, airway management, oxygen delivery, application of dressings and bandages, splinting of extremities, spinal immobilization, and administering CPR.

Advanced ambulances are equipped with advanced equipment and tools to handle critically ill patients. They are also equipped with an ECG monitor, defibrillator, intravenous and blood drawing tools, etc. Services include advanced airway management, cardiac monitoring and defibrillation, IV administration, and administration of select life-saving medications. 

Neonatal ambulances transport premature and sick babies to specialized care hospitals which can provide the right kind of treatment and care to infants. They are equipped with incubators for new-borns or premature babies.

There is a special type of ambulance service for transporting mental challenged patients from one place to another. This is not like your everyday ambulance. The interior is designed to exclude dangerous equipment. The team is well trained for this. This includes patient restraint training incorporating physical and or medical sedation.

Air ambulance, boat ambulance, and the likes are not different from the above. They render similar services with special needs. For example, air ambulances go to remote villages and mountains that the others cannot get to. Boat ambulances take care of emergencies on water. Their level of intervention is dependent on the type of equipment and medical crew.

Bike ambulance, bicycle ambulance, and similar type of ambulance transport emergency crew and equipment known as first responders to the scene of an emergency.
