How To Get Medical Certificate For NYSC

The national youth service corps (NYSC) was established after the Nigerian civil war. The purpose was to unite Nigeria. In this programme, graduate from recognised tertiary institutions at home and abroad under the age of thirty are to participate in nations building. Exception were those who have served in the military or above thirty years old.

NYSC has four cardinal programme. They are orientation camp activities, service to the nation at place of primary assignment (PPA), community development service (CDS) and passing out parade (POP).

So many corp member have died during service. Their death can be attributed to several factors. One of which is stress from the programme. Majority of these stress related death happen during the three weeks orientation camp. To curb this menace, the management of NYSC in 2016 introduce medical certificate. This certificate must be submitted to NYSC on the first day of camp.

Medical Certificate

There are two types of medical certificate. The one that shows you are fit and ready for service and the other that says you can't go for service. You can only submit one done within three months to NYSC orientation camp. It must be from a government hospital like a general hospital, military hospital, federal medical centre, etc.

How To Get A Medical Certificate

To process this medical certificate, go to the card room of your preferred hospital and pay for the card if it is your first time or take your old card if you have gotten it before. They will assigned you to a medical doctor who will refer you to a laboratory within or outside the hospital for the necessary test.

Medical Certificate Test

The laboratory will take your blood sample from your hands, your urine and stool sample. The compulsory test are:

1. Pack cell volume (PCV)

2. Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) antibody test

3. Stool analysis

4. Urinalysis

5. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) test

Optional test sometimes included are:

1. Blood group

2. Genotype

3. Blood glucose

4. Blood pressure

5. Chest x-ray

Take the results sheet cake to the medical doctor to interpret the result and sign. The chief medical doctor will also sign with a statement. The medical certificate must be in the hospital letterhead paper. This is the document you must submit to the NYSC management.

For a medical certificate that states that a graduate cannot go to service, the reason must be stated. When the reason can be verified by a test, the test should be included.
