Through the CDS, members of the Service Corps work with the local communities to promote self-reliance by systematically prospecting and executing development projects and programme which impact positively on the socio-economic development of the host communities. CDS allows Corps members to contribute positively in the development of their host communities.

To participate in a private CDS, it must be approved by the state coordinator. Approval is subject to application from the corp member. Previously, we have discussed how to write a CDS project proposal. This post will provide a sample on a good CDS project proposal.

Introduction

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable. In 2019, there were an estimated 229 million cases of malaria worldwide. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 409 000 in 2019.

Some population groups are at considerably higher risk of contracting malaria, and developing severe disease, than others. These include infants, children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and patients with HIV/AIDS, as well as non-immune migrants, mobile populations and travellers. National malaria control programmes need to take special measures to protect these population groups from malaria infection, taking into consideration their specific circumstances. Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; in 2019, they accounted for 67% (274 000) of all malaria deaths worldwide.

The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2019, the region was home to 94% of malaria cases and deaths.

Total funding for malaria control and elimination reached an estimated US$ 3 billion in 2019. Contributions from governments of endemic countries amounted to US$ 900 million, representing 31% of total funding.

Prevention is cheaper than cure. There are various means of preventing Malaria infection. The most viable and safe method is the use of insecticide-treated net (ITN). Sleeping under an ITN can reduce contact between mosquitoes and humans by providing both a physical barrier and an insecticidal effect. Population-wide protection can result from the killing of mosquitoes on a large scale where there is high access and usage of such nets within a community.

In 2019, an estimated 46% of all people at risk of malaria in Africa were protected by an ITN, compared to 2% in 2000. However, ITN coverage has been at a standstill since 2016.

Feasibility Studies

1. 1000 ITN

2. A 1000 seater capacity hall with chairs, tables and sound system

3. 1000 Printed fliers

Aims And Objectives

1. Encourage the use of ITN at all times. It is true the government is working at distributing ITN. But most women don't like using it. They fear the chemical in the net may be dangerous to their health and their baby.

2. Explain how to use ITN and when to use it. One other problem with ITN is the lack of awareness on how to fix ITN. With practical demonstration, these women should be able to see first hand the best way to use it and prevent mosquitoes from coming through. Also show them when it is most important. There are different species of mosquito with slight variations in breeding season. This knowledge will be valuable for women in deciding when to fix their net and location.

3. How to protect the ITN from damage and how to mend it. It will not be fair to buy new ITN every now and then because it is dirty or got torn. This project will cover how to protect the net from diet and damage. Also, how to fix a broken net with minimal stress and resources.

4. Encourage visitation to the hospital or any available primary health centre for advice and treatment if got bitten by a mosquito early in time.

Who The Project Is Aimed At

1. Pregnant women. They are most vulnerable and prone to malaria infection. And since most antimalarial drugs will not be suitable for them during pregnancy, it is important to prevent the infection.

2. Nursing mothers of children below the age of one year. The child depends on the mother for care. The mother may not be able to give the baby quality care in case of malaria infection. So it is important for the mother to protect herself.

3. Children below the age of five years old. They account for the malaria burden. The reason is that they have not developed strong immunity to malaria infection. So little bite, they come down with malaria.

Strategy On Actualizing The Project

This project does not just end with distribution of the ITN but conscious creation of awareness on the importance of prevention of malaria in our society with emphasis on women and children. In the light of this, the following are strategies or analysis of how the project will be actualized, that is to say, the work to be done in the course of the project as well as work already carried out.

(a) Obtaining the figures of the number of pregnant women and under five children in the area using an ozoro general hospital.

(b) Engaging in intensive research in Libraries and the Internet to obtain the relevant information

(c) Getting ITN

(d) Reaching out to hospital and organizing awareness lectures in maternity ward and big halls

(e) Giving out free copies of the ITN to as many pregnant women and nursing mothers as possible.

Duration Of The Project

The project will be divided into five (5) phases which totally will cover a period 16 weeks that is about 3 months and 3 weeks. What is involved in each phase is outlined below.

1. Information Gathering-2 weeks

2. Getting ITN-8 weeks

3. Reaching out to hospital-2 weeks

4. Organising seminar-2 weeks

5. Distribution and Enlightenment-3 weeks

Conclusion

I am very sure that this project will make a considerable impact on the child and mother mortality rate in this region.

It is very obvious that challenges would be encountered in the course of the project, but I will not relent or be overwhelmed by any challenges as I am determined to see improvement in the first against malaria.

Granted, this no doubt marks a step in the right direction but it would not be necessary to stop at this as other related projects need to be carried out.

Many countries that achieve a high level of reduced malaria burden never achieve it in one day and so we also believe that with the necessary support given to projects like this, we would no doubt find a place among the leading nations in the fight against malaria.
