How To Verify NAFDAC Registration Number Online

All products including drugs must be registered with the national agency for food and drug administration and control (NAFDAC). This includes imported and locally made drugs. A registered drug is given a NAFDAC number.

It is mandatory to include the number on each drug pack. The number starts with a two letter or a letter and a number prefix like 04, B5, A7, etc. It is followed by the dash sign (-). Then last four numbers like 9764. Two products can have the same NAFDAC number as long as it is from the same company having the same active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). In most cases, the two products have different excipients which mean one may have better bioavailability or other better attributes. A company is made to make another registration when the two products have different API.
The reason for the introduction of NAFDAC number in 2001 by late Prof Pharm Dora Akunyili was to fight fake and substandard products in the country.
How To Verify NAFDAC Number
There are two ways to verify NAFDAC numbers. The number can be looked up at any Nafdac branch. To make checkmate of fake and substandard drugs easy, the number can be verified on NAFDAC website.
Online Verification Of NAFDAC Number
To check it online, get a computer connected to the internet. Log on to www.nafdacverify.com.ng. On the search number dialog box, type in the NAFDAC number of the drug you want to verify. Click on search. The product and other details will display.

Alternatively, visit http://greenbook.nafdac.gov.ng/ and input the details available to you. It could be either the name of the product or the NAFDAC number and click on search. The details of the product will come out such as product name, application name and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API).
This method is not a hundred percent full proof. A fake company can steal the NAFDAC number of an existing drug and use it to package their fake product. A drug found on the NAFDAC database does not make the product genuine. There is also the possibility that a new drug product register with NAFDAC may not have been entered into their database.
